Does anybody know how to interface a LaserWriter printer to an Amiga 3000? I have the serial port set up with the LaserWriter mode switch set to 9600 serial and have tried to send postscript files to SER: but nothing happens (sometimes a visit from GURU). My serial preferences are 8N1 at 9600 baud and I have tried the 3 handshaking options to no avail. I'd appreciate some help if anybody knows how its done! Thanks Les Deck

Ensure you have a nul modem serial cable. If you don't, get a nul modem adaptor. You can't print directly to it via a normal serial cable. btw, if you can justify it, an Appletalk board will make your printer print much faster. We use appletalk boards on our Amiga's here, and it's amazing how fast the printer will print with one installed. Appletalk is much faster than serial.

Where are you getting the Appletalk boards?

I believe our Appletalk boards are from Progressive Peripherals. I think they're called DoubleTalk. We had a different brand before that didn't work very well. The DoubleTalk software is pretty old, but generally works fine. Occasionally the last page of a multipage job doesn't print, and you have to print it again manually, but I think you'd find the speed increase worth it. And for us, there is no other choice, since all our printers are on our network.

Hm, I think that won't do the rest of us any good. Isn't Progressive out of business?

Oh, I wasn't aware that they were. I thought they had a fire and then got back in business. If they're not around, then I think you're out of luck because I don't think anybody else is making them. (Commodore made nice networking software, but didn't put networking hardware into the computers. Atari added Appletalk hardware to their computers, but didn't write any software. Maybe we should get them together sometime. 😉

Thanks for the null-modem tip, that works great.
