#Rendering Speed Question
8 messages in this thread
Gregory, a 486/66 that works correctly will render scenes at almost double the
speed of a 33. Something is seriously wrong with it. What memory manager are
you using on that machine?

Both machines use QEMM ver 6.02. But why should all of the "speed" numbers bee
so different?
You really should upgrade to the latest flavor of Qemm 7.x
There is obviously something wrong with your system/configuration. I have
NEVER seen a 66 render the same speed as a 33. Or maybe you've got a well
engineered 33 motherboard, and a poorly engineered 66 motherboard. I've got
two AMI EISA 66's that render 20% faster than the other NICE ISA 66.

John,
PMJI. I just noticed you mentioned the NICE board. I haven't been able to solve
what I thought was an easy problem. I have the NICE SUPER EISA with 256MB. I've
talked to MS, QUARTERDECK, …ETC. The CMOS message says 64MB and ADDITIONAL
192MB AVAILABLE. Dos and qemm only sees 64MB until I use HIMEM.YSY /EISA, then
it recognizes 89MB. Wierd. NICE said that the board was properly set up as long
as I was getting the correct ADDITIONAL memory message. I thought that there
were a lot more 3DS'rs with over 64MB configurations. Can you help?

Kurt,
The only person I know of here which is using more than 64 is Paul Lind. I
recall he was running 128 Mb. Maybe he'll poke his head in and give you some
insight. The other person who might know is Gus Grubba.
I'd be curious to know how you resolve this. Its hard to imagine that Microsoft
couldn't help you but then I've had similar experiences.
You might try the ACAD forum. There are some serious power users over there as
well.

I don't run more than 36 megs on my machines (AMI & Nice MB's, will take 256,
but I haven't had $$$ or reason to do that, yet). My first guess is that the
NICE board has a defect. I'd try the memory on another board before moving on.
I know Paul Lind used to, and Matthew Freeman still does run machines with more
than 128megs. They may have an idea of what's going on.
Still, it really seems like the board's the problem, I'd eliminate that
possibility first.
good luck,

John,
Thanks for the suggestion. I did have some luck figuring this out. With
HIMEM.SYS /EISA enabled and QEMM disabled, 3DS sees the whole deal. Dos MEM.EXE
would only report 64MB but when I run 3DS it sees it all. I wasted alot of time
with MEM. MSD did however report the correct memory size.
I saw some threads here about disabling the video shadowram and doing the
shadow with QEMM. I'll give that a try. For now, 3DS (and I) are very happy.
Thanks

Glad you got it sorted out. Very strange that QEMM would not recognize all the
memory.
