I am having problems with putting " <path> share.exe /l:500" in my autoexec.bat
file. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
My autoexec.bat file is as follows:
SET PCPLUS=C:\PCPLUS
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS

If you are unclear what that line about share means, you are being asked to
add a line to autoexec.bat like this:
C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:150
(I am deducing that C:\DOS is the correct path (directory) for SHARE by the
presence of SMARTDRV.EXE there.) This assumes you do not have a line in your
CONFIG.SYS file (usually in C:\) installing SHARE, something like
INSTALL=C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:150
which would do the same thing as the AUTOEXEC.BAT line, only earlier.
If you have added such a line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT, what is the first thing
that tells you it is not working? Do you get a squawk about "Bad command or
filename" as you are starting up, or what?
MINID 1.2 has problems, at least for three of us who have not been able to get
it going. I've messaged the author, and he briefly indicated he will look into
it. In the meantime, MINDB1.ZIP has been "hidden" in the library until we get
a better notion of how to get it working. If you succeed, please let us know;
it may help us figure what is wrong for others.

Thank you for the proper grammar. Ever since I made the switch to Windows in
January of this year I have been very reluctant to fool around with the
autoexec.bat or config.sys files on my system.
I tried inserting {C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:150) into both the autoexec.bat and
config.sys files (separately), no squawks, but no deal either. The only squawks
I will be hearing will be at the end of the month after receiving my Compuserve
bill and my long distance telephone bill (Tokyo to Atlanta).
The software comes up on the screen fine, and the database file "appears" to be
loaded and ready for searching. The only problem I have is after doing a search
I try to print the results on the screen but nothing appears! It would be
really first class if it worked.

Hi, Torrie–
If your only trouble symptom is that MINID will not list any minerals, that is
the same problem I encountered. I am reasonably confident it is not a SHARE
problem; MEM/C shows it loaded and I get sharing violations as I would expect
with an active SHARE from other applications. Something else seems needful.

the author, has he shed any light on the problem?

I have to be brief this time, I just logged on and found a *most* gratifying
ton of stuff on the forum. I still haven't had time to even read it all, much
less answer.
Anyway, I just *finally* got Windows 3.1, and was able to get MINDB1.ZIP (I
*think* that was the ZIP name) running. I haven't gotten back to the author to
volunteer to repackage it and re-upload. Most of the problems I ran into were
due to multiple compression methods, and minor "glitch" type things that needed
to be worked through. There were enough of them that it made life difficult.
Also, the author uploaded *two* packages awhile back. I had to combine "the
best of both worlds" to get it to work.
Now, as to how well I got it running, I don't know. I typed in the parameters
for quartz and it wouldn't find it. I mostly attribute this to my not taking
time to RTFM 🙂 but it *does* work for me. Specifically, what are the
symptoms? Also, in the shuffle of setting it up, I *couldn't* RTFM, I lost it,
and the author's name. If you have that, I'll volunteer to re-upload
it………JD

I'm not sure about Nathan and George, but Torrie and I have no big problem
bringing up MINID in windows (from MINDB1.ZIP alone with no special adapting in
my case at least), and selecting the database. But any attempt to get it to
admit the existence of any mineral chews up a lot of time and shows us no list
of minerals. Like you being unable to search and find quartz. Entering
parameters that should match calcite matches no minerals, and trying to simply
show the entry by entering the name "calcite" misfires also (I can see it in a
hex dump of the data file).
I see no manual other than the windows help file. The author is Mike McCormack
(73123,2165).
