#flics to output monitor
15 messages in this thread
to anyone and everyone,
we have the standard vanilla targa+32 two monitor system. i am attempting to
get flics to play on the output (RDPADI) monitor and regardless of how i
configure my vibrant drivers, i am unable to get a flic to play on the output
monitor. does anyone know what little trick i am missing to get these things
to play on anything other than the work monitor? will there be MLB in '95?
many thanks, michael
Michael,
if you have animator pro there is a targa+ driver that allows you to playback
your animations from the framebuffer and record it if you want. I used it all
the time for previews before I got my PAR.
martin,
yes i do have animator pro and i attempted to select one of the three targa+
drivers. each choice crashed the system and i naturally thought twice about
selecting any of them again. since it sounds like the only way to do this
mehaps i'd best try it again.
many thanks for responding.
michael
I don't have any experience with this (and wasn't able to do it just now on our
setup.) I have only seen flics play "over there" when Animator Pro was
configured for the targa drivers.
nik,
thanks for responding. i attempted to choose a targa driver while in animator
pro and each choice (there are three) crashed the system. i must not be doing
something correctly. obviously there are times when it would certainly be
useful to output a flic directly to tape or disk.
i'll keep trying thanks,
michael
The Targa card may not be set up correctly – these are tricky. Here's our
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. These are not very efficient files because
they're on a machine that we're always working on! But it plays flics on the
monitor with AAPro.

i am much indebted to you for actually typing all this up. i understand exactly
what you mean when you refer to setting up targa+ cards to do ANYTHING! what a
nightmare. anyhoo, i will set up these files in my computer and see if i can
do what really should be EASY but ISN't!
thank you very much for this info. michael
Michael,
To play flics to the Targa+ from within 3D Studio, you need to set your
driver to Vibrant (& configure for the Targa+), not RDPADI. RDPADI will
override the use of the Vibrant settings.

Kevin, thanks again! Your name has come up in Product Support recently because
a couple of people were looking for a TGA 2 PostScript converter…
Thanks!
kevin,
aha!!!! in knew there was some little gnarly trick involved. if i'm reading
you correctly, by specifying RDPADI as my output, i'm locking myself out of
overriding that which i'm specifically trying to do.
i know that didn't make much sense but i THINK i understand and will give this
a try. it sounds very much like i need a specific 3ds.set file to boot up with
to run flics on my output board. have i actually understood this correctly?
many many thanks, michael
Michael,
You might use RDPADI to render to the Targa+, as in stills, etc. To
play a Flic, you'd have the Flic Playing driver set to Vibrant, with their
Targa + driver selected [either Targa+ NTSC, or Targa+ (use TMODE.EXE)] and ADD
the resolutions. If VIBCFG makes no other complaint, you might be able to just
swap out 3DS.SETs. Since I no longer have a Targa+ in my demo system, I can't
check the specifics on this for you.

kevin,
i did indeed attempt to "construct" everything to accomplish playing flics on
the output monitor but continue to be unsuccessful. i did as you recommended,
making a duplicate 3ds.set file, changed the RDPADI output to vibrant and
re-booted 3ds. not only did the flics not play on the output monitor but of
course, ALL read image commands produced a pix on the work monitor—–nfg. i
will re-read your latest, try ONE MORE TIME and if i fail, will continue to
remember how simple things used to be.
thanks for all your time and patience michael
Michael,
Sounds like you did configure for Vibrant, but did you change the card
type for the Flic player to Targa+, or leave it set for your VGA-type
main-display card?

kevin,
here in the relative peace and quiet of my 48 hour pass from insanity central,
i honestly can't remember quite what i did (or didn't) do. i'll try again
monday and see if i can figure this little gremlin out.
thanks and regards, michael
