Can any of my funky Cserve friends tell me how I would go about getting an
Internet address? It would have to be a mobile one, as I travel quite a bit.

I expect you already know that it is quite simple to receive mail, etc
with your CompuServe address? You didn't mention if you needed full
access to all Internet sites for browsing or whatever. Enjoy your
travels! (Feel free to come back up to Boston anytime 🙂

In any case, you'd get a shell account from a local provider, and
publish it as your main email address. Get a new account wherever
you go, and telnet to your main email address to pick up mail.
Where do you think your most common addresses will be in the next year
or two?
My two most common addresses are the Worcester, MA area, and the Brisbane,
Australia area. I can probably get by with going through my Cserve account when
I'm in other areas.
Many people have suggested the Cserve gateway, but I really do need an Internet
account at this point. For one thing, I need to send files to other net users.
Also I'm getting tired of the exorbitant fees to send messages to the net, and
I have a lot of friends over there.
What would you suggest, if I stick to the two addresses and use Cserve when
elsewhere? If it's cheap enough I can always get two accounts.

Hi Michele:
I just signed up for a local Internet service too. The cost is to be 13.95 per
month for 6 hours prime time, midnight to 6 AM free. Over 6 hours I am to be
billed at 3.00 per hour. This is cheaper than Forum costs on CIS but I'm not
sure I can off line the way I do on CIS. This will be a new experience for me.
I have applied for an address but I understand that it will take a month to
clear it. FYI this is a new service here in Jacksonville, FL. They also have
a 10 hour rate at 19.95 per month + $2.00 per hour over 10. There are no other
charges unless you post an advertisement with a server storage of 25 megs. then
I think they charge you $60 per month for the ad. I'm not sure how this works
if you are outside your server's local phone access. It may cost you LD phone
call. At least with CIS you can gain access just about anywhere in the world
with local phone connect. I'll have to ask about this.

I'll check into the details and how you, with your mobile nature can best get
an account that will work for you. I'm pretty new to this but as I understand
you must be affiliated with a server company or you have to have your own
server. When I get all the details I'll e-mail to you.
Get two accounts. One in Worchester, and one in Brisbane.

Now how do I find out who to call? What's available? (I looked up "Internet
Nodes" in the Yellow Pages and had no luck.)

The first thing to do is download PDIAL.TXT, Peter Kaminski's list of public
Internet dial up sites. You can find the file through the IBMFF (IBM File
Finder). The version on CompuServe is not the newest, but the file gives an
address where you can get the newest version. You can then FTP it through
CompuServe (GO FTP).

Brisbane, Australia. I was born and bred on the Gold Coast, an hour south of
Brisbane. It's summer there now and I'm sure the surf is "going off!".

You already have one, at least as far as email is concerned. Anyone on
the Internet can send you mail addressed to:
Michele Bousquet, 100237.162@compuserve.com
Note the "period" instead of the "comma" between the numbers. You will
receive this email from the Internet when you log onto CompuServe.
To send mail to people on the Internet, use the following format from
CompuServe:
INTERNET:addressname@filename.ext
Just fill in their Internet address after the INTERNET: and send it
from CompuServe as standard email.
If you want to do all the other Internet things beside email, such as
file transfer, etc., you will need a standard Internet account.
Thanks. I already send a lot of mail to Internet through Cserve, which is why I
want an account. The fees are getting to be ridiculous.

Hi Michele,
You might want to check out Hooked here in San Francisco. They have several
solutions for people like you who travel around alot. First, the software
interface they use, Pipeline, supports remote logins. Second, there is the X25
Compuserve connection which allows you to dial in through a 1-800 number and
pay $3.00 per minute. Third, they have said to be in the process of setting up
some kind of link to SprintNet. Please give them a call at (415) 281-6550.
The cost is $25 / month for unlimited time, $10 or $15 for 10 or 15 hours a
month(sorry I am so absent minded about all this). They also will put up a
home page for you for zip now. If you want more presence on the WWW they can
do that to for a fee, sliding scales for MBs of traffic/per period.
Everything, is in transition to WWW support. We have been using Trumpet
Winsock with a SLIP connection then running Netscape on top of that for cruzing
WWW. Works great and so much fun girl. Hope this helps some.
