My many friends, The following statement does not reflect the views or opinions of AmigaWorld Editorial. Rather, it represents the management's decision to cease publication of AmigaWorld. While AmigaWorld no longer exists, please don't speculate they "knew something the rest of the world didn't" concerning the liquidation. Not true. They received all their information and updates from Dan Sullivan and myself. Hang in there! Tim Walsh ————————————————— TechMedia Publishing announced that it will cease publication of AmigaWorld as of its April 1995 issue. The continuing impasse in the Commodore liquidation–now in its 11th month–was cited as the primary reason. With no firm prospects for new ownership of the Amiga, and no new Amiga technology introduced during the past two years, the company felt it could no longer justify publishing the magazine. Current AmigaWorld subscribers will be offered a choice of two other IDG publications, both of which contain editorial content relevant to the needs of Amiga users. An official letter detailing these choices will be mailed shortly to all subscribers. First published in July 1985 to coincide with the launch of the original Amiga 1000, AmigaWorld is proud to have covered what many believe to be the most exciting and innovative personal computer ever developed. We thank all our many readers and supporters for their dedication over the past decade.

So what will happen to people with issus remaining from their subscription?(it would be nice too get it switched with amigacomputing OR will idg switch it to Another pc mag ,like several of my previous subscriptions to other defunct idg mags?)

Lepido, Apparently, a "hot line" of sorts is established, however, I'm not aware of the details. Everyone has left for the day, including the switchboard operator, so I'll post the information concerning it when I come back in on Monday a.m. Thank you for your support, Tim

Thanks TIM I have come to regard all the kind writers as friends and so will miss that but what will be will be. It is too bad because most of us who started out with C-64's so many many years ago knew COMMODORE was selling itself short by non advertisting and the AMIGA users are mostly word of mouth/sight buying the computers mostly on what they saw themselves or another AMIGA user turned them on to. AW was the souce for me and I will miss it. TAPS is all so final and sad….. thanks again for your contributions which enabled me whatever limited knowledge I do posses about the best computer in the world.

Thank you for your support, Dennis. Tim

Thanks, Tim. You've been there for a long time, and I know this must be a very sad thing for you. Will you be moving to another IDG publication? —Betty

Thanks, Betty. Yes, over 10 yrs. with IDG. Right now there's a lot of options and I certainly don't want to make any hasty decisions. After some meetings in the weeks to come I'll have a better grasp of my destiny. Maybe an editorial position in Nassua? <G> Tim

Tim, do stay in touch and let us know what you decide. You've been a very big presence in the world of Amiga, and we don't want to lose touch with you. —Betty

Sorry to hear the sad news, Tim. Nothing's perfect, but AmigaWorld always gave my products and company a fair shake and was indispensable in helping a small outfit like mine get out the word on products geared to esoteric corners of the Amiga Community. I've been a subscriber since early on – still have a couple of the 'Premier' (odd-sized) issue around, as well as many more recent copies. Best of luck to all at AW – hope you find a computer 1/2 as interesting to report on!

Thanks, Dan. Companies such are yours played a critical role in the success of AW. I have no intention of walking away from the Amiga. Until another computer comes along with the same character as the Amiga, I'm standing by mine. Sure, you can find faster machines, but nothing with the overall character. Stay in touch. Tim

Thanks for the very kind words, Tim. Please let us all know where you land (work-wise, that is! 🙂 ). I hope maybe you can continue to keep the world informed about Amiga stuff maybe at your sister Desktop Video publication. I'll be sure to keep you personally updated on MegageM's Amiga and video-related stuff if you do – or wherever you find yourself. I second your words of support for our venerable platform, too. I can't think of anything that'll replace my networked dual-Toaster/Flyer setup for my desktop video at this time. I, too, may move on to add a NT workstation for future projects but by no means have I any intention to clear out of the Amiga-related business! Carry on, Sir.

But Tim; Idle speculation is fun… … and about all we have left.

I've always enjoyed AW. I travel so much that I had to rely on news stands to get my copies, but it was well worth it, just the same. It's sad to see AW go, but I understand that business don't survive without a positive cash flow. I wish you and all the staff at AW the best, and hope that you all find new postions that are challenging and enjoyable.

Thank you, Alex. I will see that everyone on the staff gets a copy of the words of encouragement that you and others have sent through this forum. Thanks again. Tim

Hi Tim, Sorry to hear about AW closing. It feels like I just lost a small but important part of my life. I have been a subscriber since '86, a full year before I actually owned an Amiga. AW really helped me grow as an Amiga user over the years. I would also like to thank you and AW for the opportunity to review GFX-CAD 3000 in late 1993. To get paid for something that I "totally" enjoyed doing was way cool! I wish you and the staff at AW all the best in your new directions. Keep in touch here on CIS! Thanks again! Tom Barker

Thanks Tom. I recall the excellent job you did on that review and especially the graphics that accompanied it. Wished every reviewer could do half as well. Yes, I intend to stay in touch with the other Amiga enthuiasts such as myself. Viva la Amiga! Tim

Mr. Walsh. I'm sorry to hear about the end of Amigaworld. My address has been changed and I did not receive the letter mentioned in the press release.

Sounds like IDG is doing to the Amiga world what they did to the Apple II world. Namely, abandon it for a larger-volume platform.
#196074From: Herman GreensteinMay 7, 1995 3:56 PM
money money money! what else?
#196197From: Doug W. SchwartzMay 8, 1995 3:39 PM
Of course it's money. All magazines are in it to make money. Otherwise there would be no magazines out there.
#197053From: Mark A. CareyMay 15, 1995 1:20 AM
Dear Sir, I recieved your notice in the mail with great sadness, atleast while your magazine was coming every month there was hope that the interest in the Amiga was still alive, as a person who works in the advertising business I can understand why the decision had to be made, I was worried for you when the magazine went down to 64 pages and it really was not a suprize that you decided to call it quits. Its a sad world though as I no longer have you Mag to look forward to every month, for ten years you guys did a GREAT JOB. Thanks for everything. Mark A. Carey

Has there been a change in the plans to discontinue publication of AW since the news of the purchase of Commadore?
