#MC2217A Drives available
9 messages in this thread
To anyone still looking for a Micropolis IDE Hard Disk 2217A, a company called
"NCA" advertised a sale on them in the San Jose (California, USA) Mercury News
paper. I don't know how many they have, or how long they will have them if
they still have any. However, I just picked up another last night. The
newspaper price is $589.00, plus tax if in Calif.
If you are thinking of this, I wouldn't wait too long.
They have four stores. Phone numbers follow.
415 493-2444 408 739-9010 408 363-4600 510 249-0850
Mail order number is 408 522-3052.
Hope this helps. With fans, they run "real cool". 🙂

Thanks for the lead. I figured this was a too good an offer to refuse so I
called them up to order. Seems they sold it and all they have left are ones
for $889 as new Mics 2217A. Guess you got the one they had at the lower price.
Did you get any free software on it? <BG> They even called me back to make
the sale but not at $589.00. There were some locally at $659 but that source
dried up. HD's keep dropping in price. I'll just sit tight for now.

That is a really a surprise. So I called them this evening (at 8:45) (408)
739-9010, and they said that the newspaper price was only good for a couple of
days. However, I asked for the current price, and it was $609.95. I had them
confirm this price, and that is what they said. So I would suggest that you
call this store number (if you are still interested) and try again. Get a
quote from them, and then they might refer you to the mail order number. Get
the persons name that gave you the price, and you should have a drive coming at
you.
I called them back to get the number of units available. They have over 5 units
available at that one store. They wouldn't tell me how many more than that.
This price is a sale, and ends on March 5th. So hurry if you are interested.
I also asked about the $889 price. They said that was for the Quantum 2.1 Gig
drive. So somehow there was a mis-understanding.

Why yes, now that you ask. They through in a copy of 3DS rel4 and Altamira
Composer because I was such a nice guy. <NOT!> 😉

Speaking of Composer, any word on its future with Microsoft? I haven't seen
anything in the rags.

You are asking the wrong person. I only use it, I don't program it. Maybe a
programmer will step in here.

Thanks Dennis for following up. I might invest in some more LD calls to check
this out further tomorrow. The joking reference to free software was that the
sales guy made reference to that price being for the refurbs. This kind of
bothered me. Coupled with $589 one day, $889 the next morning and now $609 in
the evening, good until March 5th. He also said the ad expired, but if I could
fax him the ad he'd honor it if they had any more of those left. I don't know
about this. The last time I ran across a really good deal I ended up spending
close to $40 in LD phone calls and shipping charges and ended up with nothing.
Guess I'll just sleep on it. I really don't need the drive now and prices are
still falling fast in that end of the market. I think maybe somebody upstairs
is trying to warn me that this is not a good deal for mail order.
I hope you got your MIC 5 yr warrantee. If so then you lucked out on this one
even if you did get a refurb.
Don;
The box the HD came in had a small red label on it. It said nothing. It was
checked by QA in November 1994. The disk is in a sealed anti-static wrap with
the micropolis label on it unbroken, and they said it had the 5 year warrentee.
Also, since I had to pay tax on it, what you pay (if out of CA) will be about
what I paid anyway.

Good, I guess the sales guy was just trying to escape the low price to an out
of stater. <G> Did you hear that another forum member got a refurb drive and
it still had some partial animations on it from someone else that had used it
on a PAR before? Really strange. I can't remember who that was. Maybe he'll
pop in with a followup. I think it was James Coulter.

I didn't hear that! I guess I better install it and check it out.
