#Remote Render of 3DS
8 messages in this thread
Hi all,
Rumor has it that there has been some discussion about a communcations program
that will successfully launch PRJ files from a remote location.
I would like to be able to modem a PRJ file to my rendering "boutique" ("farm"
is just so pedestrian) when I'm working offsite. So far I've had no luck with
the Procomm Host setup. Any advice about what program(s) have worked and any
special configuration advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Laurie
You might want to look into ReachOut of Laplink Pro/Windows.
We are currently evaluating PC Anywhere for just this same thing. Will let you
know how it goes. Others have told me they've done it without a hitch, but our
video drivers are causing some hitches. Doug-In Dallas
This is why I mentioned ReachOut. It seems to have enhanced support for
high resolution color video.
Well we are returning AnyWhere and picking up Remote this week, keep you
informed!
Laurie:
I'm gonna talk theoretically as I have not tested this myself although I use
PCanywhere all the time to check progress on my net-renders happening at the
office as I relax at home:
A. When doing a net-render a couple of files are created in the 3DSNET
directory.
These are the files for which each slave workstation polls your network
server. If you placed your workstations in slave mode and chose ANY when
selecting slave workstations then whatever project you send to the net-queue,
generates the files required for the process and they in turn start rendering.
So, if you happened to have a workstation at home with 3DS you could create the
net-render files needed for your process and then with the help of PCanywhere
you could copy the files from your home PC's 3DSNET directory to the office
bound network server. If your office PC's were in slave mode then they should
fire up and kick into action.
B. Another way to do this would be to have 3DS running on your network server.
When you access the server via PCanywhere you would control that machine and
could theoretically fire up 3DS and kick off a net-render as if you were at
that machine.
I have not tried either scenario, I'm speculating in the hope that someone may
be able to offer insights into whether either of my scenarios is practical or
would even work. My preference would be for scenario A as speed and access to
other tools would make working much more productive. Scenario B seems like it
would have to be slow as all of the 3DS GUI information would have to flow over
a phone line.
I have no idea if your mouse would operate quickly or at all. You wouldn't
want to fire up Windows and image editing tools on your server via a remote
connection as this would also be slow.

Laurie,
Under NT server network with a RAS connection you can network render remotely..
Big problem though – the resulting frames have to be stored on a common drive,
file transfer time will kill you. However, using RAS will let you monitor the
rendering job without any problems.
