Does anyone have any cool Star Wars related 3ds Meshes? Especially an Imperial Walker.

If you can find someone with the Syndesis 3D Roms 1 and 2 I think I remember seeing a walker on one of them.

>>anyone have any cool Star Wars related 3ds Meshes? the Rendering Plant BBS has a top notch collection of meshes, including virtually all the sci-fi related stuff that exists. We have a walker object that has texture maps and a walk animation that is top-notch! The number is 816-525-8362, and it's a 28.8 line.

>> the Rendering Plant BBS has a top notch collection of meshes, including virtually all the sci-fi related stuff that exists. << You might want to compile a list and post in the Asoft library. I think it would be very helpful to those looking for specific items to be able to check there first. FWIW Speaking of which, have you considered doing a CD? If so and you would like some help maybe Bob Ritger would be interested.

Good idea, thanks. >>Speaking of which, have you considered >>doing a CD? If so and you would like some >>help maybe Bob Ritger would be interested. There won't be a Rendering Plant CD, but I'm working on the CD that will be included with my 3DS book to be published this summer. I'm going to include the work of some excellent modellers that have contributed to the BBS, so there will be some great meshes on it. I'll also include combination textures I've created, where there are good textures with proper bump maps to go with them (something no one else has bothered to publish to my knowledge).

>> Ok, will do. << Super, I think this will be of great benefit. Maybe you'd consider a trade. A good mesh for time on your BBS. This might encourage even more contributions. >> I'm working on the CD that will be included with my 3DS book to be published this summer. << Great! What is the title and who is the publisher? (I guess most proficient 3DS'ers don't admit to reading books on the topic but personally I buy everything I can get my hands on. Well almost. <g>)

>>Super, I think this will be of great benefit. >>Maybe you'd consider a trade. A good >>mesh for time on your BBS. This might >>encourage even more contributions. I would certainly consider an original mesh in trade for time. A good mesh is hard to find! If anyone with original work wants to send it to the BBS (new users *can* upload), or to me via internet (trinity@tyrell.net) or here on CIS, I'll check it out and give a month or two for good, usable stuff. It's rare that someone with 3D skills would rather give files than just pay the relatively low subscription rate. >> I'm working on the CD that will be included with my 3DS book to be published this summer. << Great! What is the title and who is the publisher? "3D Studio for Beginners", coming this summer from NRP! Jim Lammers

Jim, >> It's rare that someone with 3D skills would rather give files than just pay the relatively low subscription rate. << Ayeee… Now that I can't understand. I guess it all depends on what you need or what you want. But I look at it this way. I crank out a bunch of stuff some of which is just experimental. I won't use it but somebody might so it just makes sense to me. But if you'd prefer a subscriber that's o.k. by me as well. As I recall it was something like $36 a year with 2 hours of download a day. How's my memory doing? >> "3D Studio for Beginners" << Now that's a book I just gotta have! <BG> All kidding aside, it'll probably do better than most. Probably have an even broader market as it will be of interest to those considering 3DS as an animation package. Jeez Jim, I think you're gonna hit a home run with a first book! Provided of course it gets good exposure. But if they place it right I don't see how it can't do well. Amazing, it never would have occurred to me. I bet more than a few people will be scratching their heads. How he do that?! 🙂 John P.S. Oh yeah and John F. filled me in on the CD thing. Yeah I know, its not terribly original. But as a friend of mine pointed out, in download time its cheaper to buy a CD. Wishful thinking I guess. I'm gonna see what I can work out with John, and when you get back to me I'll have a better idea what's in demand. Maybe you'd be interested in posting a "wish" list as well. I'm interested to know what level of quality these meshes are.

>>But I look at it this way. I crank out >>a bunch of stuff some of which is >>just experimental. I won't use it but >>somebody might so it just makes sense to me. I bet yours are worth checking out! Most folks don't produce meshes that are very usable when they're just noodling. >>something like $36 a year with 2 hours >>of download a day. How's my memory doing? Close. It's $48/year for 1 hour a day. >>Jeez Jim, I think you're gonna hit a home >>run with a first book! Thanks! I'm working hard right now to make that happen. I want it to be so good that even advanced users will find the book to be worth the cost. >>Provided of course it gets good exposure. It's an NRP book. They're very good at getting books distributed and promoting them. >>Maybe you'd be interested in posting >>a "wish" list as well. I'm interested to >>know what level of quality these meshes are. I'm not *that* picky. Just usable stuff, properly modeled, with enough detail to be usable at fairly close range. I like home furnishings, business equipment, and characters. But anything done well would be great!

>> I bet yours are worth checking out! << Thanks. I guess that explains it. I've been wondering why people have such an keen interest in meshes. That's what's gotten me curious. <g> As I build the vast majority of my own, and only in a pinch rely on outside meshes, the whole thing has made me wonder. I guess its just been a naive assumption. I'll dig through my stuff and see what I've got that might be interesting. Regular pack-rat you know. <g> The book sounds great! I really think you've struck right at the heart of it. 3DS is just about to boom, yeah I know for more than a few of us it did along time ago, but I think NT is going to make some serious players take note. Alot have but alot more will. We're going to witness the second wave, and its going to be a big one IMO. Which in turn is going to generate a tremendous amount of interest. And the timing on your book couldn't be better. Again IMHO. I certainly wish you well with it, and I'll be contacting you shortly on the mesh thing.

>> I'll dig through my stuff and see what >>I've got that might be interesting. >>Regular pack-rat you know. <g> Thank you for your trouble! You can uuencode them through internet to me at trinity@tyrell.net, if you'd prefer. For me, the Internet is virtually free compared to the rates here. That's why I'm spending nearly all my on-line time on the 3DS listserv. >>The book sounds great! And the >>timing on your book couldn't be >>better. Again IMHO. Thanks for your encouraging comments. I'm working hard to make it as good as possible. >>I certainly wish you well with >>it, and I'll be contacting you >>shortly on the mesh thing. Thanks, John, I look forward to hearing from you. Jim

>> Thank you for your trouble! << You welcome, its kinda fun actually. The resolution on some of them is pretty dismal, seeing as performance was an issue up until about a year ago. >> Thanks for your encouraging comments. << Yeah well, its hard work writing a book. But its on a great subject. 🙂 I've got a couple of meshes that I think will do it for you. Only one map is a custom map which I will send, the rest have been adjusted for standard 3DS maps. Probably get them to you Saturday. I'm not surfing the net, have to give what "life" I have left. <g> One of these days I'm gonna setup a page, and then it'll all be over. 🙂 John

I tried to convince Jim that I'd be glad to press a Rendering Plant CDROM for him, but he wasn't interested. Then there's the complications of models like Star Wars walkers… those are really the property of George Lucas. Once you start selling them in a traditional manner, you can easily run afoul of the law, or at least their lawyers, who were trained by Darth himself. 🙂 Apparently they haven't advanced enough to consider that meshes on a for-pay BBS is not that different than selling them on a CD, so you can still get meshes of protected shapes on BBSes and the Internet. My company is working on Syndesis 3D-ROM Volume III, and we're still looking for people to contribute meshes. If we use your mesh on the next disc, we send you a free copy of the disc, no charge. In this way, you get your model on CD along with hundreds of other contributed meshes, too. This time 'round, we had one guy who sent more than one hundred nice household objects!

O.K. John, As usual you make a good argument. <g> Shall we take this e-mail so we can determine the options? John

Hey Jim! <G> Been on your board and love it, It need's more Animal Meshes though,…I've got a client that has to do some really quick animations for a sports/Hunting/Fishing show and he's allready used up the WCK Walleye and Reindeer in vairous forms,Not much call for the APE of BEE either, Have you got a source for other Animals? I'll look around, I think I may have some LW objects like that. I'll encourage modelers to do more animals in the meantime. Thanks – Jim

Jim, Some people have probably already mentioned this, but be *very* careful about distributing copyrighted designs, especially those from the Star Wars films. In a word, *don't.* Lucasfilm, like Disney, is extremely aggressive in stomping on anyone using their designs without permission. — Jon
