Hi All, I just got my upgrade from PhotoStyler to PhotoShop which I placed in Jan before the announcement of 3DS to NT. I wondered if anyone had heard about an NT version, if so is there an upgrade path? Thanks, John

Glad to see you solved your problem John, but you've got to stop having these conversations with yourself. People are starting to talk (g).

>> People are starting to talk <g>. << I'm sure I give some people plenty to talk about. I used to be wonder about it, but then I realised they must be really dull boring people! So here's to all the dull boring people, may they grow up and get on with it, whatever it is. <BG> Thanks for the concern though. 🙂 So where we you at 4 in the a.m.? <G> FWIW I thought about deleting the messages but with all this concern about NT, I thought maybe the fact that another good application is supporting NT, might be worth leaving posted. (For those that have better things to do than talk about other people, like photo composite. <G>) John

<<another good application is supporting NT…>> Do you have to request the NT version when you order? I just bought Photoshop, it should be arriving today. -TC (Hoping I didn't blow it…)

>> Do you have to request the NT version when you oder? << No actually that's what suprised me. But it shouldn't have as it uses the Win32s specification which can be implemented for standard Windows. Of course with real 32 bit processing you'll want to run it under NT. A nice bonus for a change, eh? 🙂 John

John I was reading a review in Digital Video today for photoshop (VERY POSITIVE) They commented that the win and NT version are both on the CD!! Is THAT true?? It's my next upgrade so I'm concerned too. Gary

Gary, >> They commented that the win and NT version are both on the CD!! Is THAT true?? << Yes it is. Although I believe its the same program but with a Win32s patch to run under Windows. I suspect that this is just the first of many programs which will come configured this way enabling its use in either Windows or NT. Which may account for all the delays in Win 95. <g> John

As far as I understand, Photoshop is a full 32 bit Windows NT application. When you include Win32s onto your existing Win 3.1(1) configuration all Windows 32bit API calls are "thunked" down to the 16bit API used in Win 3.1(1). So you can effectively run a Windows 32 bit application on a Windows 3.1(1) setup. But since Windows 3.1(1) isn't a full multitasking, multithreading operating system any program that uses these won't run even if you use Win32s. So the Photoshop program must remove these capabilities in order to be compatible with both Windows NT AND Windows 3.1(1)+Win32s. The advantage of 3DS R5 is that it will be a "native" WinNT application, therefore allowing it to take full advantage of the operating system capabilities. For this reason you won't be able to run it on Windows 3.1(1) even if you have Win32s. Win32s is simply a "bridge" between a 32bit and 16bit API. Though it does add some "nice" features of WinNT as well. <<I suspect that this is just the first of many programs which will come configured this way enabling its use in either Windows or NT. Which may account for all the delays in Win 95.>> The Win32s add-on has been around for a while now. In fact one of Borland's older compilers didn't run on Windows NT but you could create Windows NT applications under Win3.1(1). Using Win32s You could then test them on a Windows 3.1(1) setup without needing to actually run Windows NT. But the irony of the whole situation is that in order to run a WinNT application on Windows3.1 you need a "thunking" layer from 32bit to 16bit API and when you reverse the situation; running a Windows3.1 application on WinNT you have to "thunk" from a 16bit to 32bit API. It is only when the Windows 32bit API becomes more popular(with the arrival of Win95) that you will see the end of all these "thunking" layers. BTW do I get the award for using the word "Win" the most number of times in a single message? <g> David "I'm all thunked out" Gould

David, I did understand that WIN32s is a bridge. As a matter of fact I have a couple of other programs which use it. Most notable being ASDG's Abekas driver. But up until recently it hasn't been all that common. PhotoShop is a fairly main stream application and so my prediction was that until Win95 is released more applications will come out using Win32s to bridge the transition. All the more reason to get NT now IMO. I appreciate your detailed description and I'm sure it will help those considering what to do next with their decision. Thanks, John P.S. You also get the award for use "thunk" most often. I thunk. <g>

<<A nice bonus for a change, eh? :-)>> kudos to Adobe. From the Tutorial, it looks like the interface is quite intuitive. This is a quality product. -TC
