#Frames to fields?

If I want to take a 100 frame animation rendered to frames (not fields),
and shorten it to 50 frames *with* fields, how do I do this?
I am trying to gain the smoothness of field rendering in
Vistapro, by rendering twice as many frames in Vistapro, then using
3DS to get frame0/field0 from frame VPro0, frame0/field 1 from frame
VPro1, frame1/field0 from frame VPro2, etc.
Would I only need half of the vertical resolution for the "doubled"
rendered frames in VPro, since each field is only "half" of the image?

Paul,
You need a utility to split the frames into fields. Having done that you can
then interlace the first frame's odd scanline and the second frame's even
scanline, for a total of 50 frames. The company Videotex on your WTC CD has
some utilities to do this for TGA images. The number is listed.
The problem as I recall with Vista Pro is that it doesn't have good
anti-aliasing, which is why many people import the meshes into 3DS and render
them there.

I didn't see if you got your question answered, but if not, you might check out
FIELDR.ZIP in LIB 2. It looks like it may do what you want (I haven't tried
it):

Here's a vague answer for you. I've seen this mentioned here, but I haven't
tried it yet.
In the 3DS.SET file (R4) option is "FIELD-NO-DOUBLE = YES". It takes each
frame from the keyframer and treats it as a field. Perhaps this will help you.

Maybe… I set it to "YES" and rendered a series of frames to test it.
Unfortunately, I forgot to delete the colon at the beg. of the line, so it was
ignored. %-) I've ditched the project for now, but will retry this method at a
later time. Thanks.

No. Never-mind. This only applies to the keyframer scene. When you render
FIELD 300 for instance, it uses the background FRAME 150. Would've been nice
though. Wishlist?

I may be a little late, but I've tried various techniques to do this. Mostly
with flics for stereographic animation, where I needed to create frames where
the odd field represented the left eye view and the even field represented the
right eye. In Animator Pro I just created a mask over the odd lines and
composited together two animations. A similar technique coulds easily be used
in 3DS' videopost. Create an IFL with frames 1,3,5,etc and another with
0,2,4,etc. composite one over the other using a mask over one field, Voila!
RazorPro or Hires QFX could also be used. If you find it difficult to create
the odd and even IFL's, then just composite the full sequence over itself,
offset the beginning of one set by one frame and render with a step of 2.

How effective is this? I've seen the result of Crystal Eyes from a video and
wonder how this compares. Are the images more "fluid"? Do you loose some
detail?

If you are using interlaced video at normal 15.75khz rates then each eye is
only getting 30 images/sec which is pretty flickery. I was doing this a few
years ago with really cheap goggles made to work with an Amiga, so I translated
everything into Amiga anim files for playback. I am mostly going to
holographic output, so these days I just view a flic or PAR ani version of my
scene and 'visualize' the result 🙂

We are using the Crystal Eyes polarized glasses in conjunction with the
animation played directly of the MAX to produce 3D images. The effect is quite
impressive. I was just wondering(and possibly Laurent who is reading this) if
there is a way to improve the quality. Though I get this is restricted due to
the limitations of the PAL video.

I think like most animators you soon learn how to see very well with your
"third" eye, besides it's cheaper too <g>

Yeah, it was thrilling to see the stereo animations at first, but the main
justification was to provide a better preview for clients who rely on only two
eyes.<G>

PAL's slower frame rate becomes a bit of a liability, since that means only 25
fields/sec/eye as opposed to NTSC's 30 f/s/e. Why PAL -I always thought you
were in the USA, or am I just being chauvinistic? <G>
Stereographics Inc. had -if I remember correctly, some kind of double speed
video tape system that delivered 60 fps to each eye. It had decent quality,
but a problematic delivery system. The Crystal eyes are much better than what
I had -my goggles used LCD shutters that responded too slowly for perfect
separation of the stereo images : (
