#Seagate or Micropolis?

I'm about to buy a 4 GIG drive to operate Premiere.
Anyone know of any problems with either the Seagate FAST/WIDE SCSI 2 Barracuda
(found it for about $2000) or the Micropolis 4221AV Fast SCSI 2?? ($1725)
The Barracuda has a larger buffer cache, but I've heard they run hot… Is
this a problem if it is internal ?? Wish I could find an evaluation somewhere
Preferences??
There's also a FAST/WIDE 2 Micropolis (found for $1750).

I have put the Seagate through a NewTek supplied DriveSpeed testing algorithm
that also checks for "idle" time (which I think means time that the drive needs
that it cannot read/write during, ie. a thermal recalibration) and received
quite impressive results. I'd say that the Seagate would be a good choice (I
am not saying the Micropolis would be a bad choice).

Both manufacturers make quality AV drives. I personally use a Seagate
Barracuda ST15150N and we've got some of Micropolis' new 3243AVs around and I
don't think you would go wrong with either one. I would be wary about mounting
either of these drives internally as these high capacity 7200RPM drives run
hot. Very hot. Pleasantly, the ST15150 is much quieter than some of the
earlier Barracudas.

I have a Seagate 4gig barracuda in my Media 100 system (from APS) and have had
absolutely no problems with it. I just orders 2 of the 4 gig MS Av drives so
I'll have the opportunity to test soon.
BtW I love APS and their customer support. Drives are very good and I've never
had a SCSI problem while using one. Never. (This is for Macs I'm referring
to). APS gives you 30 days to try the drive out, and if you don't like it for
any reason, just repack it with the enclosed return coupon, and send it back.
No hassles no questions. I've never had to send one back, but I've read
accounts of occasional person having to return one without any problems.
I haven't used any F&W drives yet.
APS is working on having their drives tested with the Media 100 system from
what I've been told. Stay tuned.
