#We call it MeshPaint 3D!
32 messages in this thread
After much hard work, we (Positron Publishing) are happy to announce MeshPaint
3D; a true 3D face painting IPAS plug-in. Simply load an object, rotate it to
the desired angle and start painting!
We will post a non-save version later this week in this forum. If you have any
questions, leave me e-mail.
The retail price is $499.95 and the program will ship within the next two
weeks. To order, call us at 800-365-1002.
We will be showing the program at NAB as well. Dealers may contact Ty Giebler
at the above number.
By the way, Dynamic Motion Module will be complete on or before the date that
MeshPaint will.

Are you going to upload any sample images, or a demo soon? I would love to see
this in action.
I'll be uploading a fully functional non-saving version by Tuesday. I can
uplaod an interface image tomorrow. Any specific questions about how it
operates are welcomed!
Thanks for your interest.
Brent
Can you load existing bitmaps and work with them?
Can you use it to adjust mapping coordinates on the fly?
Yes, you can load existing bitmaps. And, as far as I know, we haven't
implemented the abilty to adjust the mapping coordinates. It was suggested that
we should.

It sure would be nice to have that ability, so you can see right away how it is
going to look.
Tim,
I'm sorry, I misunderstood. We wrote a full renderer in to the code so that you
can see the painting immediately.
Brent
can you shift or tweak the bitmap around while working on it, or is it strictly
paint and go? I should probably just wait for the demo. I don't think I am
getting across exactly what I mean.
regardless, it sounds very cool and I can't wait to see it.
OK, I understood you correctly the first time. This is somewhat humerous. No,
the position of the map in relation to the object can not be altered from
within the program. Gary recommended we add such a feature, and time permitting
we will.
Brent
Then I would say add it to the wish list item for future release.
Sounds like a hot ticket. Can't wait to see it.

Mike,
It's been hard to keep this a secret. I've been dying to tell everyone and feel
like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. We sent Gary Yost a copy a
few weeks ago and he seemed to like it a lot. Leave me mail after trying the
demo version that I'll upload soon.
Thanks
Brent
Sound like a plan, and I know what you mean about keeping the so hush, hush.
Mike
Brent;
Sound like a great product. Are you restricted to just filling in the faces
with color or can you actually pay no attention to face structure and just
paint away? Also, can you paint bump, transparency… and other type of maps
as well?

Zac,
>>Are you restricted to just filling in the faces with color or can you

You are not limited to simply filling a face. You may paint on as little or as
much of it that you like.
>>Also, can you paint bump, transparency… and other type of maps as well?
The program strictly works on texture maps, but with the flexibility it
affords, you will be able to produce a wide variety of looks (bumps as well).
Because the program ultimately produces a .tga file, it could be used as a bump
map as well.

So does this mean that the .TGA that is created is editable and then can be
applied as a bump or other type of map in the material editor?

Yes.
Brent.
Totally Cool man.
Hi, 3D Studio user here,
Interested/intrigued by 3D meshpaint. What exactly is this capable of?
What kind of tools does this IPAS routine offer? I'm also interested in
Skeletal Morphing. Would you happen to design these type of IPAS routines for
3D Studio release 3.0?
MeshPaint 3D works with both release 3 and 4. It has tools commonly found in 2D
paint programs; airbrush, blur mode, flood fill, etc. The advantage is that
even on a 486 system, you can get real-time results.
As far as the skeletal morphing is concerned, you may want to investigate Bones
Pro from Digimation. I suspect it can do much of what you need.
Brent
Thanks a lot for the reply, but I am worried SICK that the 500$ Bones pro
package won't be compatible with my 3DS 3.0. That's what everybody's telling
me. I need 4.0 Inverse Kinematics support. What do you suggest? Is it all true?
Hi Philippe,
<< Bones pro package won't be compatible with my 3DS 3.0. >>
I checked their docs and it states that Bones Pro and Smooth work with R3.
However, they suggest that IK found in 3DS4 will add value to their package..
RE: MeshPaint 3D, Dynamic Motion Module
Congrats! I read Gary's rave rumor a couple of weeks ago and warned our users
group that something great was coming. Now I know what the voice mail message
from Ty was about! I'll call tomorrow.
Paul -Rising Star Graphics
Paul,
Yep! Ty has begun notifying the dealer channel. Give him a call for the
details.
Brent
Let us know! Where will it be posted? Very exciting possibilities!! Gary
Gary,
I've just been told that I'll receive the non-save version a week from today
(Friday the 17th). I will post it then. Look for it in the IPAS Usage
directory.
Again, the non-save version is fully functional, with the exception of saving.
So, you'll be able to paint on any object you like, with all of the tools.
Brent
Congratulations, Brent! It looks like you'll make history with the first
non-SGI 3D paint program available for us regular ole mutant types.
Here's to a smooth last couple of weeks for ya!
– G
Gary,
Isn't there a 3D paint module for Ray Dream on the Mac? Perhaps that is
the first "Announced" non-SGI package. It also doesn't sound as generally
useful.
Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Is that shipping yet? (I didn't think so.)
– G
Gary,
Probably not shipping. They did mail out some lit. on it though.
Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Given how close Brent is to shipping his IPAS plug-in, I bet that he makes it
first.
– G
Fantastic!
Please let us know as soon as the demo version is in the library.
