Don, what kind of mountlist do you have for the Syquest?

A standard one (my Amiga is still packed up for a few more months so I
can't quote it to you exactly).
I show the typical things such cylinders, heads, sectors per track,
device (scsi.device) filesystem, etc.
When I want to use it, I simply turn on the drive, wait for it to show
ready, and mount SYQ:
And if I want to change platters…I do so, and then issue a DISKCHANGE
SYQ: command. All the platters are formatted and partitioned the same…so it
works fine for me.

When I tried to mount a syquest 270, HDToolBox recognized the drive and
formatted it just fine – but I was not able to get it mounted. So I was just
wondering if I needed to add a mountlist for it. My hard drives don't require
mountlists with 2.1, but apparently the Syquest does.

This may be different for me 'cuz I'm on a 3000, but I didn't need to do
anything with the mountlist here. I used HDToolBox to low-level format and
partition the cartridge, then rebooted. That gave me SDH0:NDOS. Then I used
the AmigaDOS FORMAT command to format the cartridge. At that point it showed
up as SDH0:BUSY and as BACKUP1: (the name I gave the cartridge for the format).
On all subsequent reboots it simply mounted BACKUP1: and gave me a single icon
by that name. <Shrug> As I said, I never touched the mountlist.
Oh… and I'm also running 2.1.

I'm still using a 2500, but with 2.1. I only tried the Syquest on this machine
once, and I was in a terrible hurry that morning – so I really ought to just
try it again.
When I hooked it up, it was immediately recognized by HDToolBox. I had no
problem formatting the drive – but I didn't get an icon for it, and when I
tried to use it, I received a message that it was not mounted. Dunno why.
But I'll hook it up and try it again. I'd much rather do my backups to a
Syquest cartridge than to tape.

Dunno why either. Maybe part of the difference is that the SCSI is built in on
the A3000, whereas I assume you're using a controller card in your 2500.
Doesn't that imply a potential difference in the device driver?
I mentioned in my first post that a place I worked put an IOMEGA in an A2000,
and as I recall we had to do some juggling to get it to work. I don't remember
if we had to add it to the mountlist or not, though.
Good to "see" you too, Betty. All of the crew, in fact. Things are hectic
but fun… not a bad balance!

I keep reading about people using a file called SCSImount – from the libraries
here. Suppose it would work?

I picked up SCSIMounter (is this the "SCSImount" you mentioned?) the same night
I first plugged in the SyQuest. Its purpose is to mount/remount a SCSI device.
You need to mount, of course, if Amy doesn't recognize the drive on startup.
This would be the case if I could find out how to set that "NOWAIT" flag (or
whatever) as I'd like. This was the way the IOMEGA worked: if there was no
cart in the drive when the system booted, it didn't know it was there even
after a cart was inserted… until you mounted the drive.
Remounting is needed when you change a cart (particularly if it's partitioned
differently), because there's no "diskchange" signal and Amy won't know you've
swapped media. If it thinks disk "X" is mounted and you write to disk "Y"…
bad news!
So yes, it's a useful piece of the puzzle, but it hasn't anything to do with
the initial bootup, which is where I'm getting hung. Might have an answer,
though; Erik Flom gave me a suggestion in another message that sounds good.
As for "still working with the Amiga," heck, I won't give it up any time soon
(at least not by choice). It's already been said in another thread: it does
what I need it to do! I see no reason to change platforms. Besides, it's
still one of the best systems I've ever used.

As I said while ago I don't understand what your problem is. My syquest 270
formats and shows up without a hitch. Unless I'm trying to use carts with
different RDBs on them. Then I use SCSIMounter (or re-boot, gag), but if you
just format a new cart after hooking it up it should work just fine. Odd.
I'm using 3.1 on a A2k w/GVP Series II, but still it shouldn't be too
different!

Well, it could have been that I was just in too big a hurry and wanted it to
work too badly that morning. I only had about an hour or so, and was due to
get out to the airport to catch a plane that day. Haven't tried it again
since. So, I'll get it hooked to the Amiga again sometime this week and see if
a second go at it can clear up my problems, too.
I only have 2.1 on my machine – but that shouldn't really make that much
difference, I'd think.

If I've got it turned on when I boot…it'll auto-mount the cartridge,
but if I've got it turned off, I've got to use the mount command to get it up
and running.
Remind me in late July (or after) and I'll look up my exact mountlist
for you.

yup…my Amiga is packed away…I'm in the middle of a move and don't
have room for 2 computer setups…and have to use the PC for stuff at work…
so the Amiga got relegated to the garage for a few months.

I'm not in the middle of a move but I can understand the "lack of room". Right
now I've got 2 Amigas and a PC in my office and am about to add a PowerMac.
BTW, I'm going to start working downtown next week (518 17th) — maybe we can
meet for lunch on occassion … don't think I've seen you in a couple of years!
