#Cheap A6/12k 2.5 IDE!

I purchased one of the JEM 80 Mg Hard Drives for my A600, Eventually found a
cable at Select Solutions… however now I can't seem to get the computer to
recognize the drive.
The HD Set-up program on the Amiga Install disk doesn't seem to work with
unless you have the HD version of the computer.
Am I just missing a driver or what AM I MISSING?

Alan,
Some A600s shipped with a Kickstart ROM that had only very limited IDE support
— Seagate drives only, I believe. If you purchase one of the
commercially-available Kickstart 2.05 ROM updates, which contain the revision
that supports all IDE drives, that should get your hard drive working. (Sorry,
I don't have the exact revisions handy…)

Even worse, they were shipped with a Kickstart ROM WITHOUT ANY IDE support!
To check this, one can look at the exec resident list, if there is a
scsi.device, either with a little program (FindResident("scsi.device")) or a
system lister like xoper or such.
The ROM with IDE support was AFAIK version 37.300.

The ROM I have is V 2.05 (37.299)
Don't suppose that means I'm 99% There to the 37.300
Does this mean I have an IDE DUMB version and need to go for the mentioned
upgrade?

Yes. The history is:
37.175 Kickstart 2.04
37.299 Kickstart 2.05 (non-HD A600, with PCMCIA support)
37.300 Kickstart 2.05 (HD A600)
37.350 Kickstart 2.05 (IDE/SCSI bug fixes, don't know details)

As I said when I pointed out the JEM drives, I didn't know which ones (if any)
were of the brands acceptbable for Amiga use. Hopefully that's not your
problem. As well, some A600s were shipped with stupid ROMs that don't include
the scsi.device/ide driver. If you have such a ROM, you'll have to upgrade it.

I'm afraid I really don't understand this sentence. I can figure out that you
can't get your drive to be recognized, but I don't understand by what.
HDSetup is just an installer script to partition a hard drive. You must know
which hard drive. The Amiga IDE driver on the A600 is set up to call itself
scsi.device, and your only drive should be unit 0. If you've installed the
drive and cable and HDSetup doesn't find any drives, try running HDToolbox by
itself. If it doesn't recognize any drives either, you may have bad jumper
settings, a bad drive, or one of the problems I mentioned earlier.

When I ran the HD Tools program it indicated No Drives Found.

What Jumper settings?? (Oops! can't find the manual that came with my 600)
I was thinking drive jumper settings, not 600 jumper settings. Try doing
"version scsi.device" If that comes back with "not found," I think you are
going to need a new ROM.
