Amiga, Mac, Unix

I asked about this in the Mac forums, but an obvious answer hasn't been
forthcoming. Since it's related to the Amiga, I thought I'd ask here, too.
I'm looking for a way to move files between Unix, Amiga and Mac systems.
I'd like to both compress the archives and preserve the extended, non-PC
filenames possible on Unix, Mac and Amiga systems. I don't think the Mac
version of LHarc works well under System 7, and the Mac version of 'tar'
from the Mac library doesn't work well either. (Its file dialog doesn't
recognize 'tar' files, even after I've changed the type and creator.) The
Mac 'compress' seems to work fine. Can someone suggest an alternate
compression/archiving system that works between Amiga, Mac and Unix
systems? Even commercial software would be OK.
how 'bout uuencode? I thught that was the unix standard… I know there's
an amiga version around here somewhere..
Isn't 'uuencode' the opposite of 'compress'? 🙂
Uuencode and uudecode are not compression utilities, they encode/decode
files to/from 7 bit ASCII so that uucp can deal with them.

I know – didn't you get the joke?
What joke? I forgot to keep a copy of my message…

the old ZOO format is available in source code and runs mac/unix/pc. The
Austin Code Works sells a floppy of PD compression tool source, incl zoo,
arc, lharc, etc.
I remember an UNSIT program for the amiga that read (but didnt create)
Stuffit format files. The format of Stuffit V1.5 was posted a few months
back. I have it somewhere.
Actually, we found the best way to move data between MAC/AMIGA/UNIX was an
ethernet NFS system. It isnt that expensive or hard to get the amiga up, we
used AUX for the mac/unix side which is $$ and somewhat confusing.
I've been thinking about simple 'ftp' more often, too – are you familiar
with the "NCSA Telnet" public domain networking packages for the Mac and
PC?
Maybe I should fall back on 'zoo' – I don't think I'd explored that option.
I hope the Mac version is System 7 compatible.
If you need the UNIX ZOO, I think I have it laying around someplace. Let me
know.

Dont think I've seen anything on their stuff. What sort of wire/interface
does it use? Seeing the ethernet-TCP/IP-NFS system work almost makes me
want to set one up at home. I've got a Mac/Pc/Amiga 3monitor desk and use
sneaker-net or LapLinkMac to transfer files at home. But with the cost of
an E-net card for each box, etc and the short distances, i think i'll keep
my low tech method. Maybe later in '92 when my wife insists on connecting
her Mac to the laserwriter. (g)
I've got one of those desks, too, except there's two more monitors for the
Toaster, too. 🙂 I run my company's TSSnet between the Amiga and Mac,
but currently have no link to the PC except for CrossDOS and Apple File
Exchange. I've been debating a PC network card, though. I'll let you know
how it goes.
John, have you considered useing Central Points Deluxe Option Board($120)?
It cracks PC copy protection and reads and writes Mac Disks. If you put it
into a BB you could use PC HD disks and R/W Mac disks from the Amiga thru
the BB. Isnt there an Amiga Dir Util that reads and writes to the BB ? Russ

Yes, I'd thought about the CP board. I've also used DOS Mounter on the Mac
side. Actually, with the drop-in special translators available for Apple
File Exchange, I think I get more mileage from it. One thing I find
especially useful is its MacBinary filter, which copies the data and
resource forks at the same time to the same file on a PC disk.
There is DoubleTalk for the Amiga which is AppleTalk compatable card that
(for the 2000/3000 or an expansion unit for the 500). As far as PCs, try
TwinExpress which hooks up the serial ports of the computers via null modem
(a TwinExpress version is available for the PC and one for the Amiga)
Hope the above suggestions are affordable for you. I have the above
2000/3000 card that I will be hooking up to a Mac. Tha 500 version is for
sale as I am also selling the 500 CPU. If someone wants both, I will sell
just to get the money I need now. I had no offers from anyone on CIS,
maybe I'll repost it.

Have you considered one of the AppleTalk bridges for the PC? That might
even let the Amiga talk to the Pc. But then the might not handle the proper
text file conversions.

The NCSA Telnet for the PC will run on Cheapernet or Ethernet.
