I have my March meteorite list typed out and can send by E-Mail to anyone interested in it. I can also send by mail. It contains specimens that are for sale. Also anyone interested in starting a small club on Compuserve to share information in regards to these priceless relics should contact me so I can get back with you later if we are able to organize something. Joseph Murakami and I are trying to plan this but can use help and Ideas to get started. Best regards. –AL

Incidentally, To all whom might be interested in the latest on the Bavarian meteorite fall, Al's clued me to the Astronomy Forum, The following's from Hans V. Kampen: <"Little is known sofar – I'm in the process of colecting more material now. From what I've seen, the meteor must have come in from the northnorthwest at a very steep angle indeed. The crater is nearly round and has an equal slope suggesting a steep impact. However some alledged observers (it is a famous walking area for people from urban Munich near the equally famous 'holy monastry' Andechs) said to me this afternoon that they heard nothing upon impact. Then a loud bang (explosion) was heard and some people saw a plume of smoke about 150 meters (500 feet high). It was mid-day which makes the event even more interesting. There is no evidence however that a detonation of a second world war bomb caused the explosion and crater, which appears here at the moment as an option. I have seen more meteor impactsites and what I have seen is consistent with such an impact. The crater lies next to a moor (EgleSee, or Egle Lake if you will) and lies exact at its south-easterly point. Snow has melten in an area of some 200-250 meters around the crater. The soil is muddy and a lot of clay has been thrown around, but in such a way that it seems very likely the thing came from the northnortheast very steep. Mudblobs (some 3 feet in diameter) ly around in an area to 700 meter from the crater mostly in a east-south-west direction. Impressive sight I must say – I've never seen such an impact before. Hi Doug, There has been some controversy as to whether it was a man made crater or a meteorite hit the area. It made the news reports as a meterorite crashing down but will have to see what the real scoop is when some of the experts tell of the investigation going on about it. –AL

Hi Doug, The answer to your question regarding the size of the meteorite that might be responsible for cratering of the scale seen at Bavaria …is…not…trivial. And, I can't pretend to be up on the crater-formation kinetics of meteorite impacts. As I've limited resources at arm's reach to answer your question, I should just answer " I dunno." (This is a bit longwinded and it's all borrowed, so here it goes…) So as to have some idea of the phenomenon of crater formation, I'd gone back to O. Richard Norton's neat and very readable book ROCKS FROM SPACE and the Sikhote Alin fall of 1947. The largest crater, one of over 100 craters, was 87 feet diameter by 20 feet deep. No more than 154 lbs of remnants were collected in that crater. A crater half that size yielded 232 fragments totaling 391 lbs. However, a two ton meteorite was recovered in '51 out of a crater with a diameter of only 11.5 feet! More than 25 tons have been recovered from that fall, and it's felt that another 50 tons may still be buried out there. From Philip Bagnall's THE METEORITE & TEKTITE Collector's Handbook, there's a cursory discussion about crater impact dynamics. Paraphrasing some of the contents: Most meteorites enter the atmosphere usually at less than 40 km/sec, the slowest perhaps 12 km/s. Compare that to Shoemaker-Levy 6's approx 20 km/sec before it impacted Jupiter. For meterites from within the solar system, the max velocity (when we hit a meteorite head-on) is felt to be the sum of the Earth's orbital velocity and that of a meteoroid, or about 72 km/sec. The atmosphere decelerates the meteorite depending on mass and density, the velocity, and the angle of inclination. Frictional heating starts an ablation process that may result in significant mass loss, depending on the integrity of the meteoritic material. eventually, most meteoroids lose their orbital velocity and attain a retardation speed, at which point, ablation and ionization stops and most meteorites just darken and free-fall without further acceleration. High velocity meteorites are slowed more intensely than low velocity meteorites. The typical reduction in velocity can be from the 40-70 km/sec to as slow as 100 m/sec. Many large meteorites are destroyed high up in the atmosphere. Between '75 and '92, U.S. military satellites detected 136 high atmospheric explosions, averaging 8/year. Three of theses blasts were equivalent to a 20 kiloton nuclear blast, several from meteorites several yards in length. Those were likely stony or stony-iron meteorites. If a solid iron meteorite is of sufficient mass and velocity, it'd never reach it's retardation point and impact the ground, causing cratering. If the velocity of the meteorite is less than 500 m/s, then a percussion crater of relatively small diameter may form, often with an intact meteorite within.. If the velocity were beyond 500 m/s then the diameter rapidly increases. At 3-4 km/sec, pressure propagation into the ground and into the impacting meteorite itself may result in an explosion due to violen decompression with high velocity ejection of schrapnel as in the Sikhote Alin, or for bigger irons, vaporized and molten material jetting into ejecta blankets, as might be observed on the Moon with Tycho and Copernicus craters, where there was absolutely no atmospheric retardation.. The mile diameter Barringer crater in Arizona, 600 feet deep, is felt to've been caused by an iron meteorite about 63000 tons and about the 80 feet in diameter travelling at about 17 km/s at 30 degrees incline. So,…I still dunno! Joseph.

Hi, Joseph– Thanks for the info; even "I dunno" can be a meaningful answer. Actually the first part about the Sikhote-Alin fall seems to have answered my real question, which should have been something like this: While meteorites big enough to retain hypersonic speeds at impact will produce craters whose size varies more according to velocity than mass (but varying with mass also, of course!), perhaps meteorites that explode high and drop rocks at terminal velocity (much slower than the original speed) might produce a relatively straightforward relation of mass to crater size. Does that allow us to make an educated guess at the size of the Bavaria meteorite, if it was a meteorite? The answer seems to be mostly no, since the Sikhote-Alin pieces produced such wide variation in crater size/mass ratios, though the fragments were likely of the same general composition. –Doug

Hi, Al– Whenever I discover a few new Fluorescent Mineral Society members on-line, I send a list of FMS E-addresses to all those I know of (we are talking about maybe a dozen now). We do a lot of 2 and 3 way messaging other than that; so far no "broadcasting" of messages beyond those addresses. But the capacity is there when an "announcement" is wanted. Is this the sort of thing you had in mind? Anyway, I am interested. –Doug

Hello Doug, Joseph and I haven't really defined what we would want to accomplish by having this group other than sharing some ideas, discussion on topics of interest and perhaps trading some specimens. I would like to get more input from others that would join so we could try to satisfy the vast majority of collectors or interested parties. I thought a news letter (E-Mail) would be nice. A guest article each month and some articles written by the members would be nice also. I have about a dozen or so people that are expressing an interest in this. I am sure open to ideas on this. I thought the Science Forum would be a nice place to have this as we have been treated very well here. Perhaps this topic would be better suited in the cosmos section but it does deal in geology also. In fact that has been the problem with this science. The geologist thougt it should be persued by astronomers (it comes from space) and the astronomers thought it should be persued by the geologist (it deals with rocks) <G>. –AL

Hi, Al– I obviously have no problems with meteoritophiles "meeting" here until a separate section, forum, newsgroup, or mail-list is warranted. Are those dozen or so all on CIS? While the handful of Fluor. Min. Soc. members on-line were almost all on CIS a year ago, now a number have appeared on other services, making it harder to get together. –Doug

Al- I'd be interested in being part of the group you and Joseph are trying to form. "How could I not be interested", I ask myself. A year ago I didn't know the difference between a Camel Donga and a grape. Now I know that (a LOT of grapes are cheaper than ONE same size Camel Donga for one thing <G>) – and a lot more – but not nearly enough – thanks to you, Joseph, and others who frequent this and the ASTROFORUM. I also hope someone joins the group who will know where I can get all those the out-of-print books I want to read that you, Joseph, an o-f-p book search service and I can't find <BG>. Let me know what I can do to help. Paul-

Hi Paul, Believe it or not (I sound like a TV program) I took the liberty of putting down your name even before you responded <G>. I knew it wouldn't be the same with out you! I will get in contact with everyone once I think I know what I am doing on this. I was a founding father of our local astronomy club and it feels that way all over again. Will need your and Joseph's support getting things going. Any ideas would be great to have. This is a lot of Joseph's idea and we have talked about it for a time so nows as good of a time as any to get it in motion. Perhaps a question aire that people could respond to, so we could deside what we want to accomplish and what direction we would like to take. If someone is lurking out there, please give me a line here or in E-Mail as we could use more people in this. Well Paul will be in contact. –AL
