I just installed the update for 4.1b, and here's what's happened:
1. It did repair the link to WinFax 4.0. Winfax reads the DTS book without
GPF's BUT
2. About 25% of the DTS fax numbers do not read correctly in Winfax. I get
either a partial number or a horizonal bar.
3. If I go into DTS to check the fax number, I find two things: First, the
number is usually just fine. Second, if I erase and then re-enter the number in
DTS, it will then appear OK in Winfax
4. In many cases, DTS replaces spaces in my phone number with a closed
parenthesis mark. That is: I enter 415 555 1212. But when I save the record,
DTS shows it as 415)555)1212. It will then show up this way in Winfax, too. 30%
of the time re-entering the number fixes the problem, 70% of the time it does
not.
5. When I try to scroll down the list of numbers in the DTS phonebook in
Winfax, I can only get a screenfull at a time. Then Winfax pauses for a moment
and gives me another screenful.
Now what!!

Now you need to (if you haven't already) patch the upgrade. Patch is available
on CIS. Called PATCH1.EXE, I think.
This will correct some , but not all, of the Winfax problems.
NOTE to DTS folks: in my patched DTS/Winfax phone book, the Last Name/First
Name still ends up in the Last Name Field. so my faxes still go out addressed
to Lennon, Finian. Will this be corrected?

I don't believe that the issue with the last name field will be addressed in
this update.

The problem I am having with parentheis marks added to my phone numbers started
to happen AFTER I applied the patch.
To repeat, after I applied the patch to the update, I found that:
1. Winfax will now read the DTS fax numbers, BUT will only read one screenful
of numbers at a time without a pause.
2. Some of the numbers appear in Winfax as a horizontal bar
3. Those same numbers appear in DTS correctly
4. When I enter a phone or fax number like this: 415 555 1212 and then tab to
the next field, some fax and phone numbers appear in DTS like this:
415)5555)1212. Re entering the number does not help.

Don't worry, you're not alone: I have also noticed all the anomalies you are
having with the WinFax integration. In fact, my, um, friend(<g>), who was
using two of the 4.1b betas, noticed the ) problem and reported it at the time,
but a fix was presumably overlooked. On a vaguely positive note, I suspect the
pause we are all experiencing with scrolling may be intended to be a goodish
thing. I suspect what is happening is that DTS is only sending over as much
data as can be read at one time, resulting potentially in a speed boost. Why?
Because one user may only have ten fax numbers in AB, while another may have a
thousand, and it might take a long time to read that many numbers, or WinFax
may not be able to hold that many external numbers in its buffer. Also,
frankly, the DTS integration can only be as good as Delrina is prepared to let
it be, as DTS is hooking into an open API published by Delrina. Besides a fix,
something I'd be interested in seeing would be some documentation of the
switches placed in WIN.INI by DTS for the WinFax integration. I haven't played
with them yet, but they presumably have an effect, and may address the
scrolling issue.

Everyone I know has the scrolling problem. However I don't see it as a major
problem. I'm just use to it. Yes it's been their even through my beta. I seen
it with other links and I believe you are correct in it's better to "stutter"
than to loose data. Also with the new sorting and searching capability I find
things quickly.
Check your Win.ini file. I've found it is not always set properly. The
following works best for me and I've used it on several machines successfully.
It allows for sorting and searching while in WinfaxPro, customization on the
gray area below the Window, and even places "boxes" above the Title Window so
you can quickly resort by Company or Name. (Although your machine may already
allow this, you'd be surprised how many machines don't customize to this).

Wow! I knew all those numbers did something, I just didn't know what would
have what effect. Well done. Question: I notice you've also thrown in some
options beyond what DTS supplies. Do you have the Delrina specs? Just curious
to know how you figured it all out.

P.S. See if you can figure this one out. As you know, the DTS/WinFax
interface uses the Page Name. What would be really neat would be if the Page
Name were used for the scroll list, but Firt Name, Last Name were used for the
Recipient. Possible? I suspect it may be, as I notice your suggested settings
managed to change the contents of the WinFax Misc. field from (something I can
remember) to what looks to be like the first line of the home address. Any
thoughts?
P.P.S. Could I also suggest you upload an enhanced version of your settings
suggestions to the Okna library? Very useful information, that I would
certainly like to refer to again in the future.

Let me second David's thanks for the win.ini suggestions; you wouldn't know how
to do something about the last name/first name problem now, would you?
I'm frustrated that after all this time they still haven't got even this
interface right.

Working on it. Trying to get the "low down" before anything is put on the
forum. Present settings were a conglomeration and trial and errors. When I
locate the proper info it will be shared.
Till then, help yourself to change the settings. Close Winfax, open Win.ini,
change settings, save reopen Winfaxpro. You'll see changes in the info it
brings back.

After my experience with your WPWIN macros vs. Okna's, I don't have all that
much faith in Okna's ability to connect to other programs!

Mike Tollin is the expert on the DTS/WinFax switches. Unfortunately, I don't
know any more than he told me. Did you read his note to me the other day? He
suggested (at the users own risk) a number of interesting changes, which
enhance the capabilities of the WinFax interface when using DTS as the phone
book. I suggested to him that he put together a text file and put it in the
library here. I also asked him if he could figure out how to use the Page Name
for the sort (as it is now), but use First Name, Last Name in the recipient
edit box. It will be interesting to see his response.
I do think DTS could/should interface better with third party products.
Personally, I think that all things being equal, its WinFax interface is pretty
good. I'd like it to behave transparently, as if it were a part of WinFax, but
I suspect that's going to require an enhanced API from Delrina. Seguing to
another integration matter, something I'd like to add to my macros is a DDEPoke
(sounds nasty<g>) which would attach files created with the macros to the
recipient in Address Book. Should be possible, and I'll look into it more in a
few weeks.
As to my macros, the current versions are only as good as they are because I've
had so much feedback over the past year. One user in particular of an earlier
versions made a number of key suggestions which ended up in the current
version. What was his name..? It's on the tip of my tongue… Could it have
been…DOUG?!?<g>

By the way, I probably could figure this out, but I bet you know it… how does
the Winfax/DTS connection choose between DTS phone books? That is, I have a
"personal" book and a "business" book. Does Winfax just look at the on that
has been last opened?

This will happen occasionally if you enter phone numbers with spaces instead of
dashes. I would suggest that in the future, you use dashes.

You are correct….but it is not necessarily good that you are correct. I find
that DTS will automatically replaces my spaces with dashes when I enter the
"page" phone number. But this is not true when I enter a phone number on the
"Business" or "Home" forms. Would you explain the reason for the behavior?

You've got a valid point; I am not sure exactly why development designed the
feature this way.
