Jonas, I'm going to go ponder you're reply… -Thanks. Scott

Hi Scott, <<..ponder.. >> No need. Have you seen my back flip IK example? There is no way I could have created that sequence using Interactive mode. Interactive mode was not designed to be a precise tool. Using the Follow Object method was the process that was designed for precise solution based on the joint parameters. Please, check out…. File Info for FLIP.ZIP Section: Mesh/Project Files Contributor: 73172,1351 Size: 95951 Submitted: 10/21/94 Type: Binary Accesses: 207 Title: IK Backflip Keys: IK FLIP R4 This is an example of using IK a number of different ways. A woman doing a 1 1/2 back flip off of a diving board. There was no keyframing of the board or the woman on my part. All movement solved for by using IK. This zip includes a solved version and an unsolved version so that the R3 users can compare the two files. Note also the flip.zip (a flip.fli) in the Animations section of the lib. IK'd and uploaded by jonas.

Jonas, just out of curiosity, what IS the purpose of interactive mode? Connie

Hi Constance, << what IS the purpose of interactive mode? .. >> *I* use it to review how modifications to joint parameters affects the solution of my kinematic chain when using the Follow_Object method. This follow_object method is required with multiple inter-relating objects in the scene . To see how I use it, review my steps in the flip.zip file in the Meshes section of the lib. You may want to change the joint parameters and resolve and note how the solution changes. jonas[adesk]

Hi, Jonas. Thanks. I will download and examine the IK example. Would this method get complicated over the course of a 3 minute character animation? Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott, << Would this method get complicated over the course of a 3 minute character animation? >> I feel that it's much less cumbersome than traditional keyframing. Also, depending on your process, the Recalc option becomes a very, very important production tool for modifying the follow object path and then resolving thru IK. jonas[adesk]

Jonas, Thanks. Are there other sources for information on IK besides the release 4 New Features manual? Thanks, Scott Sorkin White Shark Systems

Hi Scott, << other sources for IK.. >> I have a text book named "Advanced Animation and Rendering Techniques" which had a very good section on a general IK solution. jonas[adesk]

Hi Jonas, <<"Advanced Animation and Rendering Techniques">> Would this be available through Computer Literacy, etc. or would I need to find it mail order?

Hi scott, I really don't know where it's available. I ordered it through work.
