#4.1b Upgrade
7 messages in this thread
I understand that the upgrade to DeskTop Set version 4.1b is now available
on-line.
Before the network version was postponed, Constantine sold us a preliminary
network version a couple of years ago and promised an upgrade to the final
network version as soon as it was completed. (We got update files in September
1993 and the label says "DeskTopSet, Network Version 4.0". The latest file
date is 8/20/93).
I understand that the final network version is still down the road a bit. I
would like to upgrade to 4.1b in the mean time, but will I lose what little
network capability we have now? At this time, we are able to share a phone
book with only occasional errors. If 4.1b won't allow even this, then I will
have to forgo the improvements in 4.1b and keep what we've got until the
"official" network version is available.
The biggest problem that I have now is that I can't print my phone book (a
glaring omission in the program, in my opinion). What is the latest
recommendation for those of us who use Topic pages to print our phone books?
My Topic page entries often do not repeat the name of the "master" entry that
they are under.
Thanks,
Louis
Louis,
4.1b will actually have improved file sharing capabilities.
Regarding printing a phone book?
Can you not print at all, or just not print only a topic page?
You can assign them to a category and then print that category.

It is not that I can't print at all, it is that I can't print my entire phone
book in any reasonable format. On the Topic page for Microsoft, for example, I
have entries such as:
Consumer Sales (Pre-sale Info)
Microsoft Information Center
Microsoft Press
Microsoft University
TS – General
TS – MS Mail
TS – MS-DOS 6
TS – Visual Basic For Windows
TS – Win/Win For Workgroups
TS – Windows NT
etc.
If I print the whole phone book, they all print out alphabetically, so entries
such as "Consumer Sales (Pre-sale Info)" are useless. Is it for Microsoft?
Okna? Symantec? There is not enough room to repeat the company name on every
page entry.
I have A LOT of entries in my phone book. The printed version that I tape to
the back of my Pocket DayTimer (and move from one to the next each month) is
dated October 6, 1992 and was printed just prior to moving my records from ACT!
to DTS. You would not believe how much ink there is in it now and how tatered
it is. It is a major PAIN to try to keep it up to date with the electronic
version in DTS and will become impossible at some time.
I use Topic pages and clones the way that the manual suggests, and it makes a
lot of sense. I think it is obvious that when the book (or portions of it) is
printed, the Topic pages should print grouped under the page entry where they
reside in the actual book.
Am I the only one who uses Topic pages and wants to print the phone book too???
Louis
I tried it and discovered what you have: that the topic page won't print. To
me, also, that makes it next to useless.
Louis,
You're not the only one. This has been suggested many times to development.
It will not be in 4.1b, but may be in the following version; the print driver
is being redesigned.

Yeah, I'll BET it has. I am just dumbfounded that a product with features as
sophisticated as those found in DTS can have such a glaring deficiency (an
electronic phone book that you can't *print*???). Especially considering the
amount of time and resources that must have gone into other, more esoteric and
less used features. Printing your phone book is a pretty basic need.

Louis ,
Point well taken
