#Help finding chair

I need some help finding a computer chair and don't know where to start
looking. The chair is sorta famous, it is the Equa chair from Herman Miller
Inc. It was in the Jan.1.90 issue of Time magazine "Man of the Decade" issue. I
have seen it in many ads for various computer, video, audio venders when there
are shots of the studios. Anyone know where to start?
Herman Miller just introduced a new chair that they say is much better
than the Equa for task work. If you've got a copy of the March issue
of Wired, you can see it on page 59 (in the Fetish section, of
course). It's called the Aeron, and it looked so impressive that I
gave the product manager (Ken Williamson) a call today (he's a 3DS
user and I took the opportunity to say hi and chat). Ken explained
some of the principles of the chair to me and I'm definitely going to
go downtown and check it out… it sounds AMAZING.

Thanks, I've wanted to find that chair for some time, just haven't made the
effort. I called HM and they gave me a local number, which was listed in my
phonebook as a HM dealer, duh. They have an Aeron demo on loan, I'm going to
check it out next week to find out if my back is worth $1000 or so.

Hey, thanks for the # for Herman Miller. I saw that chair in the Wall
St. Journal & have been looking for it. My current chair (at home) is probably
undoing all the bodywork I've ever gone through.

I've been using a really good chair for the past 5 years that I was
forced to get after killing my back with r1. Although I love this
chair, I'm interested in going even further with back support if the
Aeron is as good as they say it is. Chronic back pain is NO FUN and,
as they say… an ounce of prevention…

As a member of the lower-back-pain club of long standing and a regular
listener to Dr. Dean Edell (national radio talk show), I may have some news
that might surprise you. When a study was done regarding the various
strategies employed by people with incidents of back pain, they found that
continued normal activity was the best way to deal with it.

There is a company in Grand Rapids Michigan, that puts out 3D versions of
furniture lines, fixtures, etc. including Herman Miller and Steelcase and many
many others in one big CD, I think.
Something by the name of "CAP". I just heard about it.
For info:
Sweet's Group 616-454-0000. in Grand Rapids.
The CAP stuff is (at least used to be) QUITE expensive. It's part of an
overall package, aimed mainly at furniture dealerships (it's heavily laden with
order-making/parts-figuring and tracking stuff, etc).
Herman Miller has some things it offers directly, I believe. You can probably
contact your local HM rep. There is another package for AutoCAD that has
3d-libraries that are supposed to be designed specifically to interface with
3D-Studio called "3Dfm", and as you can no doubt deduce, it's got a lot of
facilities management features — but they have libs of furn for all the major
mfg's.
I've got some info on 3D-fm around here somewhere — I'll dig it out if
anyone's interested….

Thanks for the info, I had an idea to compile a similar CD. Of course I had no
time or money to pursue the idea. Glad to know that someone else has done this
already. Steelcase has been sending me their product line for a couple of
years. They even send me 3D .dxf files and a developer's kit. Their meshes are
not too complex but they get the job done and hey, they're free.

I asked today and got a "don't know" answer. The person on the phone said she
had tried to find this out before and does not yet have an answer. She
suggested that my local Herman Miller dealer would know. My local dealer must
be very busy selling chairs because I've waited on hold till my patience ran
out. I'll try again tomorrow.

The chair discussion was began concerning the physical chair, interesting to
those of us who sit on our butts a lot. <g> A couple of people were interested
in specific HM chair meshes.
I've been using your little people lately. I built a model of a
tractor-trailer rig with sides that expanded into a classroom and demonstration
area and used a Dress Lady, Suit Lady, and three Shirt Men. This was for the
Fed. Highway Admin. and they absoultely loved it. The video helped cinch a
half-million dollar deal that will keep me busy for the next year!
I'm doing another proj now that shows a vehicle outfitted with a bunch of
laboratory instrumentation. I'll use several People in it, too. Do you want a
tape with some samples? Is your address still the Box 432 one?
I really like your People for People meshes. They give just enough detail for
the kind of things I do without bogging down the computer with a zillion faces.
I have Suitpeople and College Students. What additional stuff do you have
available now? Could you list packages and prices?

I still read up here and try to see what everybody is doing, and what everybody
thinks about Hardware and NT and see what Ana is thinking (g). I just don't
have much to contribute, until I humiliated myself eating my chicken taco
burger in my favorite mex. restaraunt-I kept yelling "That's Humanoid, that's
humanoid!!!" So I had to come up here and find Tim. I guess Greg already knew
about Gate to the Mind's Eye and mostly everybody else.
Did you see there is a new P4P CD? Did you get the insert postcard?
It is still just for existing people users.
That is a great film guy, finally. He does 200 line screen with a special mix
of dot shapes, so the rosettes don't bullsize all thru the color or moire.

I have to make a formal apology for the price changes over the last two years.
The new creatures will be published once I see if everybody thinks the CD
format is OK. The second is always smoother.
I would love to see _any_ of your work on tape! The addresses are both the
same. Your " high view" of the accelerator is still one of the best composed
plan images-it shows 3DS can be used for the classic architectural elevations,
floor plans etc, and nobody has to stay up all night coloring. Did you ever
upload any of those?
Michael Mollinelli sent a wedding in a church he designed, with beautiful
vierendel like trusses and suitpeople and a view from the altar- very
quiet-just perfect.He made a priest like you made labman or clipboard man.
Somebody made a foreign army out of the suitpeople(g).
Dave Walter put the "able" suitpeople into Herman Miller offices-
He created all the textures for the lines of furniture and has a collection of
3DS maps I think he sells. _That_ is whom whoever needed the HM chair should

I've been using the People on company time lately. I've been so busy doing
animation projects for work that I've had to farm out 95% of my software
development work. 3D is more fun! I'm still working at home on my own
equipment, but I've got one big project that will pay for new equipment and
software. I'd like to buy all of your models for work – I'll call & see what
you have.
I didn't see the CD postcard. Could you send another?
I got the BonesP and played with it some, but got too busy with work. I did
make some incredible twisting, flexing eggs with faces. <g> I'm hoping to take
a week in May and just sit and play with the computers. (And 2 weeks in June
from CO to CA with the family and the laptop stays home!) I have my
reservations and flights for Siggraph already – the travel dept made the
arrangements but I don't know which hotel the picked. I'll plan on seeing you
there!
I'm in the middle of 3 projects all due sometime in the next 3 weeks. When the
smoke clears, I'll make a tape with a bunch of samples and send it.
I'm glad you're staying busy. Those people that I know that avoid things that
take effort and energy seem to get old fast.

Thanks for checking on the Herman Miller stuff. I'll give my dealer a call as
well. It would be pretty funny if ASOFTers around the globe started hounding
their local HM dealer for 3D files. I'm sure there are a few folks out there
who can appreciate the irony of architects badgering furniture dealers for a
change. <G>

Hound Herman Miller at 616/654-3665. They do offer a CAD symbol library
(probably 2-D).

Trust me when I say, Go for the chair. I'm going to receive it in about 3
weeks (they make everything to order).
I also saw it in WIRED and fell in love with it immediately. I had my rep come
and demo it, and loved it even more. Although, if you're used to an Equa,
you'll have to get used to this one (for about 5 minutes :-)) but I'm positive
you'll love it.
Depending on the options it can go from $800 all the way to $1200. Just a tip:
don't get the one with the two stage pneumatic lift, since the one stage is
enough for 99% of the population. And it'll save you a few bucks.
I also called CAP Sweet Group for their symbol library of HM in 3D but they
want $1400 for the CD/per year subscription, plus another $1500 for their
proprietary software to view it in ACAD. And it's not in 3DS files… Oh
well..
