#ToolAlias Replacement?

Can anyone recommend a replacement for ToolAlias? Since switching to OS3.1, I
often get a requester saying Please Insert Volume Progdir, or something
similar, before project icons will load their aliased default tool.

You could try MagicCX (file MCX.LHA in AmigaUser libs). It's a big commodity
but replaces many others (including ToolAlias, screen and mouse blankers, many
more). It's shareware.

I did take a look at that once, but it had some incompatabilities with my
system – probably the Retina. Thanks for the suggestion though.

It's now V1.1. I think Kay did improve a few things and has hunted a number of
bugs down. Maybe your probs have vanished?

Unfortunately, in the course of the many hard drive corruptions and other
troubles I've had since getting the WarpEngine – though they're not all the
WarpEngine's fault – every trace of AssignWedge except for the executable has
vanished off my hard drive, and I couldn't find it in the libs either. Maybe
someone else could point you to it?

What you described is that it asks you to 'insert' a device which an assign
would fake out. I think there are other utilities which will fake out the tool
requirement of an icon.

No, yes, sort of, what I meant is that for some reason ToolAlias will cause a
demand for the assign PROGDIR: even when it has an alias for something.
Actually, it just occured to me to try and assign PROGDIR to RAM. <g>

well, since OS 2.0, PROGDIR: is automatically assigned by AmigaDOS, for
each program you start, to the full path to the directory the program is
located in.
Some newer software make extent use of this feature.
But some older tools manage to circumvent this facility, especially if
they patch or use their own code for loading a programm from disk.
Another example of a program which will not take care of this because of
it's special load routine is the Debugger `Monam' inculded in the `Devpac'
assembler.
You may workaroud this, if you assign PROGDIR: temporarily to the home
directory of the program which will cause the problem. But dont't forget
to cancel the assign right after you finish with that program, because
other software may reside in other directories and will probably fail if
PROGDIR: isn't assigned correctly.
You may check this feature. Open a cli, cd to some path other than C:, and
type
which progdir:
It will respose `DH0:C' or `HD0:C' or where ever your command `which' is
located.
But if you get a requestor saying `please insert volume Progdir: in any
drive', when typing the above mentioned command, something is wrong with
your system. Maybe you run some third party tool or commodity in the
background which will cause this.

I also recommend MagicCX here in the libraries. It is very good and replaces a
lot of other commodities. It is also available via SWREG.

I did take a look at it once, but as I recall some of its features didn't get
along too well with my system, and it took up a heck of a lot of memory. FAST
mem I've got in abundance, but being stuck with an 1152×900 Workbench in order
to get that size Wordworth eats up a lot of CHIP mem – I've got less than 1.6MB
after booting – and I just can't seem to persuade myself to ditch any of the
utils I currently have running.
Oh well. I could swear someone had mentioned another little tool that
performed the same function as ToolAlias, but I think without the GUI.
