#Upgrade to 3.1
9 messages in this thread
I would like a little advice about installing 3.1 on my A3000T. My current
system is 2.1 with 2.04 ROMs. I want to install the new 3.1 ROMs for the 3000,
hopefully I won't have to reformat my hard drive etc.
Also, there is a warning about not having a monitor capable of synching down to
15.5 Khz… there will be no picture? Does this apply to the 3000, since there
is a deinterlacer at 31.5 Khz?
No, the deinterlacer will work just fine. And you won't have to reformat your
harddrive either, unless your Sys partition is too small to hold 3.1, and
unless you want to take advantage of DC-FFS, the newest version of the
filesystem, which offers Directory Caches.

You have a new feature in 3.1. That is Directory Cache. Maybe is better to
reformat it. You should have a backup anyway, just in case.
I have a 3000 and I upgraded short time ago. You're right about the
deinterlacer. We, proud users of 3000s, don't have that problem, but we don't
have AGA anyway…

Not that AGA is a replacement for the deinterlacer. That was one of the many
design boners they pulled in the 4000, losing the deinterlacer, since there are
so many programs (and virtually all games) that will refuse mode promotion.

Of course, I guess I didn't express myself properly. So we agree.

What kind of performance increase can be exspected with 3.1 Directory Cache? I
upgraded some time ago, but I guess I did not read the docs very well, as I
have just know found out about it.

With 2.1, I remember SysInfo measured a transfer speed never greater than
1100Kb/sec. Since I upgraded to 3.1, the normal thing is to go over 1800Kb/sec.
I didn't make the experiment of formating with & without Directory Cache thoug.
Judge yourself.

thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and back it up.
However, next question, if I use Ami-back to control my Archive Viper tape…
does Ami-Back have any problems with 3.1? I remember when I upgraded to 2.1, a
similar dilemma about whether to back up. I reformatted and had to go download
a new version of Ami-back to restore my tape.
I don't know. I don't have Ami-Back.
The thing is that I have a couple of HDs partitioned, so what I did was copying
all the stuff to an empty partition. In fact, only my WB partition is
Directory-Cache-formatted. I'm waiting for a friend to bring his Syquest and
doing it for the rest of partitions.
