I use one industrially, and it holds up great. The L2 is a better choice if
you need long or superwide lenes. I wouldn't expect the control-L to give you
frame accurate vtr functions, but if you are really wondering if the RC
timecode is accurate, I have never had trouble with my EDLs being off when I go
to the frame accurate decks in the local edit suite.

Thank you for the feedback on the TR700. Funny about the control – L accuracy.
I read a report in Video magazine that said the SONY VX-3 was frame accurate
for editing with control L. Of course, the VX-3 cost almost three times the
TR700. Someday all this stuff will be digital.

Good estimate, although its possible we'll see some units this year, at least
at the pro level.

The Hitachi Z-2000 advertised in February Videography, p. 77 … is this a
completely digital camera? If so, where is the image stream stored?

I haven't read about this specific camera, but read a note in a magazine about
Hitachi showing a prototype that was not only digital, but actually solid
state, the video stored in Flash memory chips. This was a prototype only,
though. I had no idea that they had a product announced for sale.

JVC is showing a digital camera at NAB that stores the video on disk. Things
are a'changing.

The Control-L is a two-way communication link between the source deck/decks and
the edit controller. RC time code will give you +- 3 frames. I can't tell the
difference betrween this an +-1 frame that SMPTE time code gives. It's not the
TR700 versus the L-2 or the Sony X3 — they all use RC time code and that will
work with an edit controller such as those put out by FutureVideo.

The only difference, really, is if you're doing animation or something that
requires rendering,

re: never had problems with EDL being off.
A kindof cool utility someone might write/rit would be an EDL checker, ie.
check all of the recorders inpoints and outpoints for "gaps" and or "overruns".
