#Output to VHS

I need to be able to place text on my scenes on a VHS tape. Is there a way to
do this with out digitizing the video. The example is placing text references
when the speaker is referencing a section of a book.

An "overlay genlock" like the GVP GLock VGA will do a great job at letting you
superimpose titles, graphics, etc., over video. There are a whole number of
messages online here that deal with it's features (and drawbacks) and you might
spend some time searching for those.

Joel, I think that it retails for between $400 and $600 depending on bundled
software applications.

GVP G-Lock VGA+ is $399 MSRP (but manufacturer is gone). Bundled with
PrimeTime, Curtain Call and Video Director 1.5 from Electronic Mailbox for
$499.

Take a look at the VGA Producer Pro. You can find more info on it in the file
VGAPRO.TXT in Library 2 of this forum. It will do what you are looking for
with real professional quality, and more.

You'll need some sort of genlock, like the one John suggested.
If you're looking for a cheaper solution (though not as high-quality, it can do
the dirty deed), the Studio Magic card, which you can get at your local
computer accessories store for around $450, can access any TrueType fonts on
your Windows system and output them to tape (and does a bunch of other things
besides).
(Jeez–you'd think, as much shilling as I do for Studio Magic, they'd pay me
for it or something! <g>)

How does one use Studio Magic in assembly edit since they won't have their
integrated machine control module out for about 60 days or so? I need a
quick and dirty cuts only edit controller for Hi8 (RCTC) that will also allow
me to do some titling, graphics, etc. I'm planing on Miro DC2 and Abbate
Video Toolkit for edit control (works well with the bundled Premiere) once
these two products are out … be this will be several months. In the
meantime I have raw unedited footage piling up. This is hobby, not business.
BTW, I'm aware of the VD 2.0 and GVP Personal Suite Plus offerings.

As for an inexpensive all-in-one solution, I'm not sure–the best integrated &
least expensive one I can think of offhand is the Fast Video Machine Lite (and
I'm not sure it does RCTC–or at least, can control it w/out some
modification). OTOH, the Video Machine Lite is also pretty "open architecture",
so when you're ready to jump to A/B rolling, it's ready for you, too.
I'd suggest a separate edit controller for now–maybe one of the Future Video
products, though it seems to me I read somewhere Gold Disk's Video Director can
also be modified to accept RCTC.

Well, yes VD 1.5 and 2.0 handle RCTC directly. That maybe the short term
solution. Cost $100 then throw away soon. I dunno. I thought you had some
experience with Studio Magic? From what I've read its titling, grahics,
sfx, etc are wonderful for the low price. If I could hobble along with it
until the control module comes out this would take me a long way down the
road … at least until a low cost EDL solution becomes obvious.
VD is a cuts only edit controller and the video addons don't seem to garner
much praise from users. If I just do cuts only without titles, etc. I'm
probably worse off with that master than if I manually construced the EDL
and cued the decks so that I could use Studio Magic today.
This is my puzzlement. I'm sure VM Lite would clean things up but at $2,300
that's not where I want to put my money. I want to put this into NLE.
