Using the hot keys Z and Shift Z for zooming… once in a while have different viewport, rather then the one expected, active. No big deal, UNLESS it happens to be a CAMERA viewport. That can quickly lead to problems. Shouldn't the CAMERA viewport be non-responsive to viewport zooms, and only "dolly" when appropriate camera dolly is invoked?

The Camera viewport responds to single-viewport zooms, but not to all-viewport (right-click) zooms. I don't know about the hot-key problem; It's a new one on me. If you can come up with a step-through to duplicate it, Jonas would appreciate seeing it. – Jack

Hi Jack: <camera viewport responding to single-viewport zooms> Well, that's what I mean. The hot key single viewport zoom in or out and the left-click on single viewport zoom icon should should function on an orthog or isometric viewport. But it seems odd that it should be functional in a camera viewport. Leads to inadvertant violent alteration of camera view. Granted, easily recovered by the opposite command, but still leads easily to boo-boos. Actually it's been bugging me for a few years<LOL> but I never mentioned it before. As you say, it can easily be reversed by repeating the command. I seem to recall some discussion about it back during Release 1, and we decided to go with it as you see it. We must have made the right decision, because nobody's complained in all these years — until now. And _you_ didn't get around to mentioning it for several years, so… <g> Who knows, maybe there's a silent majority out there who are going absolutely batty about this, but just can't around to mentioning it. 😉 – J

>>camera zoom button… I've never liked it either, but as you said, it is reversable and there are always more interesting things to think about. JKJ

>>Camera Zoom Well, now that it's come up, I'd have to say that's one little thing that's always bugged me too. I think you just shouldn't be able to do it at all. DM

Count me in, I never liked it as well. It is only reversible when you know you have done it. I had a collegue do it while we were working on an animation and he didn't know he had done it until I looked at his work and had to go back and fix it. It took a while to get it back to normal because he had made a bunch of changes after screwing up the camera.

<silent majority going absolutely batty> now there's an oxymoron for ya! Anyway, i finally did mention the zoom and bet there are a number of folks who have been confounded by it. Jeffrey

We'd love to hear from anyone else who feels strongly about it. That's what this forum is for (among other things). – J

<<The Camera viewport responds to single-viewport zooms, but not to all-viewport (right-click) zooms. I don't know about the hot-key problem; It's a new one on me.>> When you use Zoom out and Zoom in on a camera viewport the results aren't always correct. For instance if you create a 35 mm lens camera and then make it the active viewport. Then press Z to zoom out once then Shift+Z to zoom in you will see that the camera lens is unchanged, i.e. the Zoom out was reversed precisely by the following Zoom in. But if you Zoom Out twice then Zoom In twice the effect is a change in the camera lens. Do two zoom outs and then two zoom ins on a 35mm lens camera with a FOV of 63 and you will find that the resulting camera lens is 61.6666 with a FOV of 40. So the effect of multiple zoom out and then zoom ins doesn't restore the camera to it's original settings. Could you fix this please so that it is consistent. DaviD "Wide angled lens" GouID

You'll see a different approach to the camera zooming issue in r5. (beyond that, my lips are sealed) – G

Gary: <beyond that, my lips are sealed> AHA! a sequel to The 7th Seal. Just mentioning "a different approach" and I start getting weird. Okay, I will stay calm and just gracefully experience the transition (while biting my tongue and waving bye bye Pharlap) I'm gonna faint!
