#PAR SCREW UP

I just deleted an empty project from my par's slave drive and now it tells me
that my drive is corrupted and would i kindly please format it and wipe out all
of my animations! Is there a way to fix this with out formating the drive or
am i screwed? and if i'm screwed, how do i tell the par to format the slave –
not the master drive? when i run the partest program and try to format the
drive it does not want to let me specify which drive to format.

I had this happen to me, and it has happened to a few others here, as well. If
you can read your ani files from DOS, try copying them to a DOS disk, then
re-formatting, and copy them back. If this doesn't work, then I am afraid you
are about %99 screwed.
This is why I always make a copy of any new ani's and back them up.

Ouch! The version of of PAR software you are using needs to upgraded. That
happened til version 1.3b (I think) the current version is 1.5 and I have even
heard of a few patches to this version, but it will take care of your "Delete
Project Directory" problem. What Tim Branan said is true about the remaining
files on the drive, just make sure that you put the PAR into its native format
"pardrv -p" and use the DOS copy command to copy each file to you hard drive
(no wild cards or ?, etc.).
About formatting the SLAVE- Use Partest.exe and go through all the steps then
select Format and go through all of these steps also and the last question will
ask you to format the Master or Slave and you should be set. Be sure to log
onto DPS's BBS for the latest software. Until then you could delete all files
and then rename the old Project directory to you new Project name.

Sorry Tim, I sent this last message the wrong direction. I re-submitted a copy
back to Jerry, there is not much a person can do in this situation I have been
there also :<. I sure hope that he is not using the latest version of the PAR
software!!!

I agree as well. I loaded on 1.5 when it was released and haven't had any
problems so far.

You've just joined a club that wishes it had no members. 🙁 Tim's suggestion
of copying any files you can still see at the DOS level is going to get at
least a few files back for you and is a good suggestion. You owe it to
yourself to download version 1.5 of the PAR software as this deleting projects
bug is allegedly fixed. Please tell us all that you have a version of the PAR
software prior to v1.5. I have tried deleting projects with version 1.5 twice
and I had no drive corruption, my fingers are still crossed. Before you start
copying your files to a DOS drive be warned that versions of the PAR software
before 1.5 have been known to cause file corruption in animations of over 896
frames. So, before you copy them off, split them into smaller segments if you
can. Optimizing the drive,if you can, may give you back a few files. You may
see files jump directories, projects magically rename themselves and other
anomolies like old animations reappearing. I wish I had better news for you.

Thanks for your responses. As for the version of Par driver, i was using 1.3.
I had already downloaded 1.5 but didn't want to switch in the middle of the
project i was working on:) I have been screwed by the Par so many times in the
past (I believe i was the first one to realize that it was corrupting large
files) that i have developed a religous practice of not only copying the *.ani
files to my system drive via dos copy, but also backing up all of the original
*.tga files to dat before putting them on the par. So i guess i'm only 98%
screwed:)

ani files back to the drive.

Just saw your PAR message. If you haven't given up yet, _sometimes_, just
sometimes, if you haven't done anything to the PAR after deleting a directory
with the beta versions of the software, if you create a new directory with the
same name it will magically work again!

Saw this thread and thought I might pose a queary.. I was copying
several segments from video to the PAR. I had just optimized the drive and I am
using ver 1.50. I copied the first two over with no problem, then I copied
the third and it caused the 2nd segment to become scrambled. I erased the
scrambled segment and recaptured it, this time it scrambled the 3rd segment.
Not knowing what the problem was I erased all the segments and figured I'd try
again. First I was going to Optimize again because it would tidy up the drive.
It told me it would need 1125 minutes to optimize…. At this time I don't
have 18+ hours to spare. Any clue as to what might of happened? It went from
optimized to that in less than 20
minutes. Do you have any suggestions an what I might do short of formatting?
The other stuff on the drive seems fine. (2017A drive is 1.1gig free)

I had the same thing happen recently… it told me that it needed 1000+
minutes to optimize I only had 480 minutes until my project was due…<g>
I hit optimize anyhow, and it took as long as I would have expected without the
"estimate" — about five minutes…

I have experienced a simular problems several times before, although i don't
think it has anything to do with keeping E/E on.
I captured 500 frames 12-240 setting
(PAL-version)
Disk Occupied 800 MB
Avail 800 MB
After the 500 frames, it told me the largest blksize was 120 (?!?)
All other animations seemed to be damaged (giving the looks of the famous
>896 problem……, and the directory told me that these
animations (which were >2000 frames) , dropped to 68 frames, 238 frames etc..
I had this several times before and put several times this WARNING on CIS
BRING DOWN YOUR SYSTEM, DON'T DO ANYTHING ANYMORE WITH THE
PAR SOFTWARE, RESTART AND YOU WILL FIND OUT THAT ALL YOUR
ANIMATIONS ARE BACK AND OK AGAIN, ONLY THE CAPTURED STUFF IS
DAMAGED, DELETE THE CAPTURED FILE(s) AND START OVER AGAIN AFTER OPTIMISING THE
DISK OR WAIT TILL YOUR PAR IS IN A BETTER MOOD.

I had a recent similar experience that corrupted, permanently, a number
of animations on my hard drive. I posted a warning last week in regards to the
problem. In my case, I optimized the drive while still in E/E mode. A bad
mistake. ALL files that were moved during the optimization were corrupted by
what was coming in the video feed. Shut down did not save anything. The
techsupport people didn't have any answers for me. I have optimized both
before and after the incident without a problem. But I will always be careful
about the E/E switch since that was the only setting diffeerent in the
occurrance. I paid a 3-day price for the problem. One thing is for sure, now
I backup then optimize, rather than optimize and backup as I was doing that
day!!!

That definately would have been inconvient <g>
Luckily Greg Pyros was out and about that weekend and clued me in to powering
down and then back up and then all was well again….. this time <g>
