How would you like to go straight to computer digital editing (nonlinear
editing or NLE) and bypass traditional tape editing altogether? I'm seeing
several solid reports of Miro DC1 users getting SVHS/Hi8 quality video
output from this board. The only gotcha is that to put lots of video on
the hd requires a large fast hd … something like a 2 GB Barracuda. You
appear to have enough machine to get going tho. This board is $599 from B&H
Photo in NYC. I'm about ready to give it a spin this next week.

Doesn't the Miro output at less than 640×480? Is it 30 frames per second?
What about compression? The nonlinear benefits may not be worth the artifacts
and loss in video quality for most videos.. VHS/8mm is bad enough as it is..

That's the rub sure enough. Users on MULTIMED are finding for home video
given Hi8 input the output to tape is better than VHS, near SVHS quality but
with artifacts when closely examined. One area is with rapid motion.
The capture is 1/2 640×480 at 30 fps and interpolated to 640×480 on output.
It's very good. Not professional quality but decent home quality. The
rumor is that the new Miro DC2 card will be SVHS quality. Announcement two
weeks at NAB and avilable May.

No, I haven't had much experience with "consumer" based cards. The PAR, Avid,
and Imix Cube are more what I deal with.

JNJ, turns out Miro didn't have a working prototype of the new PCI D20
(not D2) card ready for NAB. Those who saw it said they were
dissappointed. Still I've decided to stay linear with Hi8 for now
and await this development before taking on NLE. I'd rather wait if
this means less artifacts, etc. Waiting will give the E-IDE drives
time to break the 1 GB barrier where they are presently stuck. And
time for PCI motherboards to drop in price. Anyway I'm having fun
with my Magni G-Lock (VGA Producer Pro) card for now. I do need a
TBC since my overlays really show up the tape's jitter noticeably.
Other than waiting on Videonic's Video Palette early summer ($899
retail but with loads of functions) do you have a recommendation? I
have one offer on a used TBCIV but at $585 it's just too close to the
anticipated street price of the Video Palette for me to go for it.
