At work we just received a NEC LC890 Silentwriter that uses
the postscript language. I would like to print items on the
NEC from within a Dbase III+ application of from DOS. I know
the NEC can be set up to emulate a HP Laserjet but for our
application we need the wide variety of fonts that the NEC
is capable of.
My question is, is there any way to print in postscript
from Dbase? Or, is there some sort of driver on the market
that would translate a normal Dbase or DOS print job into
the appropriate postscript program?
If there isn't a driver like this available I would think
there would be a good market for one.

There is a program that will make a postscript printer emulate a normal
character printer in the download section of this forum. All output could
also be redirected to a file, and that could be printed by running it through
a filter to print it from DOS. You can get a program from the Ashton-Tate
forum to redirect any printer output from dBASE to a file. It is called
SAY2FILE.
Thanks but when you say emulation I assume that you would lose
all of the fonts that are normally available with a ps printer.
I've got a feeling that I'll will end up compromising and using
our Hp Laserjet.

If you want to do anything like "filling out forms", where your form data is
in a dBASE III database, you can certainly do that through Ventura Publisher
(though Ventura is much more than a "driver"). You can use dBASE to
construct a formatted text file which can be used (printed) with Ventura. -bg
