#3000 Video outputs

Hope you've had some time to spend groping the 3000. There is a question
that burns at my soul…
If the 3000 has both 15kHz and 31kHz outputs, why do you need a
multisync monitor? I had assumed (probably incorrectly) that normal
computer-monitor use would be with the display hooked up to the 31kHz
output, and that all modes would appear deinterlaced at that frequency
(except the highest). The 15kHz output would be used only with genlocks,
etc.
Perhaps the only 31kHz rates are the deinterlaced modes plus the
productivity mode, and that the ones that didn't interlace in the first
place still exit the 31kHz port at 15kHz, requiring a multisync?
How does the 1950 look?

The A3000 works with a RGB analog, VGA or multiscanning monitors (yes VGA!)
(not all modes supported with VGA or RGB analog monitors).

Yah, I see where the tube is a .31mm dot-pitch. That's reasonably good for
that size monitor and will contribute to some crisp imagery, as you say.
(.25mm is available, but the cost goes up and the brightness output goes
down.)
I really worry about them using the term VGA so heavily. I'd rather they
used "VGA-rate" or somesuch. Calling it VGA outright implies that the stock
Amiga somehow runs VGA applications, or has the exact VGA screen format,
shows existing VGA pics, etc. The only thing it has in common with VGA is
the horizontal rate. Oh well. A video-tech's beef.
I'm anxious to see one of these puppies. I hope they stick with a
quality monitor on the 3000. Some of the models of displays sold for the
other machines suck big-time.

Its my understanding that the 1950 is a VGA compatible multisynch, but I'm
not at all sure; anyone know for sure?

It's specs are:
.31 dot pitch
50 to 80 Hz vertical sync
15 to 36 kHz horizontal sync (I think 36… > 32 anyway)
So yes, it should work on an MS-DOS machine with a VGA adapter.

An English friend told me about the monitor being displayed with the 3000
in the English show. He said it looked 'old fashioned' to him, but that
the display was crisp. He said that someone from Commodore UK told him it
was a 'Ranger' monitor with a few changes. Know anything about that? He
considered it old fashioned because he said the corners were all rounded,
and he thought of that as being popular about five or six years ago, but
not now. Just one man's opinion, of course.

The VGA monitor can handle 31.5KHz and 60 or 70Hz vertical rates while the
standard super VGA 512K card can handle 256 of 256K colors in 640×480 or
640×400. The monitors are cheap, and a VGA or PS/2 monitor ought to be
able to handle everything but overscan Amiga modes.
Karl – a 31Khz output would fry most normal monitors, quite literally.
You'd need a multisync for the de-interlaced modes. – kev

True, but I had heard (or thought I understood) that the flicker-fixed
output was going to be 31kHz ONLY, that the lower modes would be converted
to that frequency. Thus, I wondered why you'd need anything other than a
31kHz display. Now I understand.

Karl – umm, right <grin>! The Flickerfix'd <tm> output would have to go to
a 31Khz display. Non-fixed displays can go to a normal (or multisync)
monitor.
Karl,
You need a multisync to take advantage of all modes, including the ones
you want shown interlaced for a reason (like when using X-Specs).
I don't have a 1950. I will be using a Samsung multisync.

So what's the highest graphics mode look like? Is it 1280 x 400? I'm
anxious to see it; our dealer hasn't received his yet. Is there a switch to
disable the scan-doubler?

That 1280×400 looked great to me on a 1084! And there is a switch to
disable the doubler for the 31mhz output.
