#DCTV Digitizer

Ben,
I've noticed your favorable comments in the past concerning the DCTV
digitizer. Could you tell me if the image quality of the DCTV digitizer in
combination with Imagemaster is as good as that obtained from a hand
scanner such as the Golden Image scanner or the Sharp JX-100? I'm mostly
interested in scanning/digitizing line art or grey scale images for DTP
using PageStream.

Sure… I've made plenty. :^)
I like it, always have. What I didn't like was related to marketing and
some things of that nature. The product itself, and the paint software, are
both excellent, innovative and a fine addition to the Amiga market.
Further, the digitizer is *very* good, as compared to the display, which is
just "pretty good" IMHO.
Plus, we've supported it better than any other Amiga developer barring
Digital Creations themselves… no one but Black Belt can load those
display files. :^)

Speaking of graphics did you see that article in the new .INFO about that
new 24bit display called OPALVISION? It really looks cool, they have a
24bit game for it too. It has… – true 24bit broadcast quality display –
1.5 meg of on board memory – twin frame buffers – custom on board graphics
processor, expandable with hardware modules. Plus a bunch of other features
and stuff. Looks cool! It'll retail for $995 It's on page 10 of the new
info.

No – we don't get .info here, so I didn't see it. But I do know a few
things about "Opal". It's made by the same fellow who did the ColorBurst,
so we've taken a wait and see attitude. He's brilliant, but there's a long
hard trail between a good idea, and even a prototype, and a finished,
released product.

My wife is a darn sight smarter than I am, and a detective story addict to
boot. I don't tease her that way, it just spoils the surprise. :^) Besides,
the twon is too small.

Yes, I can tell you. No chance. :^)
A scanner like the JX-100 will make the DCTV digitizer look like a child's
crayons, for that matter ANY video digitizer, even a higher quality one
like the Toaster's. The ES-300c (at about $1100 right now) is an even
better bargain.
The catch, of course, is that DCTV can use your video camera if you have
one, and the JX-100 requires a relatively small area of prepared paper,
preferably a photograph and NOT a color print (although with some work, and
a lot of memory, those can come out ok too). The ES300c can use even more
memory, but will accept anything up to a full page as a source.
You've got to look at (a) what you're willing to spend, (b) how much memory
you have, (c) if you already own a camera (if not, the net $$$ involved
here may be MORE for a DCTV system) and (d) what final quality you really
want.
Nothing can beat a scanner for quality in the end.

Bem… the latest .info had a nifty blurb about some new scanner
software for the ES-300C scanner. It even works with ImageMeister
<grin>. With a clear conscience (and a straight face) I can recommend
both the ES-300C and MetaScan. I'm _highly_ impressed by both… now,
if I can only find IM…

Yeah, it's great being able to work with the ES-300C! Blows my old
digiview out the window. Not being able to do 'solid' objects isn't
much of a concern (just photo them and slide em onto the scanner). A
*major* improvement is the way I can just slide a page onto the
scanner, click on preview, click on scan, click on save… and I get
a pic with which my Digiview cannot compete! Even in greyscale or HAM
(nope, not HAM-E.. *HAM*). The more I work with it, the more
impressed with it I become. Today, I promised myself, I try working
with it with IM. 🙂
It works *very* well with IM.
I wouldn't know. 🙁 Tried running IM today… crash. Wasn't running
Metascan in the background, but I was grabbing messages off of CIS at the
time. <heavy sigh> gonna try again when I reboot.
