Gary, –What an upgrade!… Man, all the new features are like a whole new
program. I can't get over how powerful that h key is and IPAS is going to
be a super tool. Anyway, I am working on an animation that has a boat
(modelled in Acad) in the water. I started to paint and animate the water
using AAP. Now I've got this new 3DSR2 wave generator. Is it meant to be
used as a tool for creating realistic water? Do you have any ideas on
different ways to create seas or oceans… maybe another IPAS app? I tried
creating just one mesh with the wave gen. then copying and flipping it over
then morphing between the two and that had some potential but I still
haven't found the magic #s for the params. of that one mesh… or should I
play it safe and continue with a 2D animation of the water. Very much open
to suggestions. Thanks again for an incredible program –Frank
WAVES creates linear sine-wave waves in any object. You've probably looked
at the ocean and noticed that it's not a regular linear sine-wave motion.
We're working on a WATER.SXP solid texture shader that will be appliable as
a bump map. It will be VERY realistic.

If you can't get Waves to work for you, there's a pretty effective
watersurface flic in the animated texture maps directory of the CD-ROM.

Frank, You might try to use the Frac program and use plasma type then use
gif to dxf program and then smooth and morph the object a couple of time.
I've had pretty good luck in creating waves doing this. Rock
Rock, I tried doing the Fractint plasma gif2dxf thing awhile back but the
mesh looked fairly flat. It was awhile ago, so I'll give it another try
tomorrow. Was your camera close to the water or was it more of an aerial
view? My camera is to be close to the water so the waves need to have some
depth. I think the R2 wave program can generate one mesh to get me close,
than dxf it to acad and tweek the waves that are real close to the camera
by hand then morph some bent/skewed variations of it. Maybe assign
different smoothing groups along the crests? Water is tough! Thanks for

A while back, I wrote an AutoCAD lisp routine which generates a 3D mesh of
three intersecting sin wave functions. I even animated the waves by
adjusting the initial amplitude of each wave. The resulting wave were very
convincing <If you would like to see an example, check out the files
DAY.GIF and NIGHT.GIF in the BIG D library (lib 10) of the Graphics Vender
forum).
If you're interested (and have access to AutoCAD), I'll dig up the routine
and email it to you.

Since the wave lisp routine is small, I'll email it to you later today. I'm
not sure if its documented, so let me know if you have any questions. As
you've probably figured out, I use the routine to generate the water in the
day and night scenes. I will also mail you a copy of the BIG D demo next
week.

Frank, I found that the depth is a function of the /s and /pi when doing
the gifdxf thing. I played around alot with it and by varing the /s and
using /pi i got some very wide variations in depth (Good mountains or
small bumpy hills) i kept the camera very close to the water. Hope it

Thanks Jack, I'm still looking through all the cool stuff on the CD. So
far I have just been looking at all the (fantastic) meshes but I'll
definately look for the water animations tomorrow.
Gary, Give us a yell when water.spx is available and thanks again for a
program that we can blow people away with <g>.

If you are looking at the water from a distance, you might try using the
NOISE.SXP routine as a bump map with a small Size setting. Look at my
animation on the CD-ROM, of flying down on a ship. You'll see that from a
distance, the water looks pretty good. Although the beginning of the Flic
where the water looks best, was cut off. This technique only works when you
move a limited distance from the water. In my case, I had to fly from about
500ft down to about 5ft, so I opted to make the water look good from
500-100ft. This made the last, closeup shots incorrect, because the Size
setting was too large.
Maybe in the future, we will be able to fade from one material to another
in the animation….That way you could fade from a distance version of
Water to a closeup version of Water. Hope…
