I heard a rumor that AutoDesk will be releasing a C++ Virtual reality toolkit. Is this true? Thanks, Simon

Autodesk has had a VR developement group for several years. Many of the initial members (Brickens, etc) have moved on but i understand there is still an active development group. I haven't heard any rumors of near term releases about Autodesk, but there are hints about several VR toolkits being released 'Real Soon Now'. Jerry

There's actually a company in Warren, NJ that just started shipping a VR hardware/software toolkit for 3D Studio models. It can do a solid 7 frames-per-second of real-time movement in ANY COMPLEXITY 3DS scene, with full shadows, mapping, etc. The way they do this is with a pre-processing stage that virtually renders the scene from a set of views that enable you to move with a full 6-degrees-of-freedom. It takes alot of RAM, and the package costs $7K, but it's pretty amazing. Their name is Straylight, and their phone number is 908/580/0086. – G
