Surpise! Same thing where I live, Vic. Sales tax upon sales tax upon
sales tax soon adds up to eight 'n' a quarter.
I used to think about having to pay taxes for air, as in Heinlein's "The
Moon is A Harsh Mistress" and boggle. I think that particular tax is now
in legislation at the county level here. They're moaning about running out
of things to tax so have decided to get back to basics.
Yep, Science fiction does have a way of coming true.

Over here in beautiful Orange County (where the air is clear and the
traffice it tolerable), the tax is 'merely' 7.75%…sorry to hear about
yours <grin>

You guys don't know what taxes are!!!
In Belgium they have a 25% sales tax (added into the price marked on item
so you dont choke on it). In Holland we have an 18.5% tax on most goods.
The tax on a car here is the real killer, after all is computed it comes
out to be around 39%. Oh, don't let me forget taxes on gasoline which run
it up to around $4.00 per gallon.

Charlie, you poor guy. Unless… What's the income tax rate like? I've
read/heard about France and Italy's income taxes (strange systems) and I
know of England's (a lot like the US's, only moreso, with their version of
the IRS being much more polite but just as ruthless)
I've figured out that the difference between Developed and Undeveloped
countries is the amount and way taxes are collected. The undeveloped
countries have armed guys in uniform hauling it away in wheelbarrows while
the developed countries have unarmed guys in two-piece suits hauling it
away in trucks. The common ground between both systems seems to be that
citizen that interfere with either of these foraging parties comes to
grief. Civilization- what a concept!

It certainly does. Dutch people are taken care of from cradle to grave. The
social system pays almost as much to not work as it does to work. Nobody is
left out in the cold. The average guy doesn't live high by American
standards, but he has a level of security that many Americans only dream
of.

level of security, too. They're also taken care of from cradle to grave.
Today must be Wednesday. I never could get the hang of Wednesdays.
Sheep and cows don't buy cars and take six weeks vacation each year either
8^). On the other hand, Dutch people aren't eaten (at least not since they
got out of Indoniesa).

Must explain the high level of Dutch productivity and dedication to work,
huh? Besides, not all sheep and cows are eaten.. and those that are aren't

Oh…income tax…thats another story.
I work for an american company that has a contract with NATO. They sent me
over here under a forign service plan that includes a tax equalization
plan. The plan calls for them to pay all of my forign taxes and I pay an
amount to the company 'as if' I were being taxed in America. Well, the
first year the company advanced me the money to pay my Dutch tax. The next
year the Dutch looked at that advance, considered it net income, fleshed it
out to gross, and taxed me on it and the company advanced me the money to
pay them. My taxes went up a little that year, 11 years later my Dutch tax
bill weighs in at a little over $400.00 a day and is on a logrithmic rise!
The amounts went critical last year, then we changed accountants and the
new ones told me to move across the border to Germany where I could take
advantage of a tax treaty between Germany and Holland and not have to pay
taxes. Of course, I still have to pay that 'as if' tax to the company but
whos complaning? I still have a job.

Yeah, but what does your health care cost you? Your phones, and other
utilities? Here, we get much less for our money…unless you count
hundreds of billions of dollars worth of military crap.

Dutch people have a national health plan which sets maximum fees that a
doctor can charge for a peticular service. When I go to see my doctor it
usually costs arround $12.00. A full scale investigation of a mysterious
pain in my side, including lab work, Xrays, tv pictures of vital organs in
the middle of my body etc… cost about $250.00. Extremely reasonable if
you ask me. On the other hand, if they operate on you and remove your
kidneys instead of your appendix they'll say oops! give you $500.00 for the
inconvience and pay for dialisis for the rest of your life. Recently, a
hospital in the north was closed because they were killing too many people
because of sloppy methods and bad hygiene; all of their patients were
transfered to two other area hospitals adding to the existing over crowded
conditions
The point is if people are too secure they loose the desire to exceed. I
think about 2/3 of the people here have their sights set 2 degrees below
the horizon.
Telephones? Two years ago we switched over to touch tone systems, In a few
more years, I'll be able to get an itemized phone bill. Where I live in
Germany, the city that used to be Charlemain's capital switched to touch
tone phones this March. In Heidelburg, the phones go dead whenever it rains
too hard.
In a socialized democracy the technological doo-dads that define the
quality of life for us Americans have a very low priority.

When discussing things like nationalized health care, it's important to ask
about the cost of incrementally *better* or *worse* health care. In other
words, if you're not happy with what you get, how much more does it cost to
get better service? If you don't like the cost of nationalized health
care, what can you do about getting a refund? How much does it cost to get
a second opinion?
There are no options. Health care is a birthright here, if you make under a
certain amount of money(about Fl.42,000.00 which is more than the average
wage) you automaticaly come under national health. If your more prosperous
you have to pay your own way or subscribe to a health insurance plan. The
gottcha is that everybody uses the same doctors and hospitals. One doesn't
have to use a hospital with a bad reputation but the good hospitals are
crowded. In this country there is a shortage of nurses and there are
doctors looking for work. Something has gone awry here. Big brother, in his
attempt to take care of everybody, has taken away their desire to excell.

That is about what it is in Dallas, Vic. But only about 7.875% in
Arlington, I believe.
