FYI, Microsoft opened a new download service BBS about two weeks ago at (206) 936-6735. They also have the "new" version of MSCDEX there in a self- extracting file, CDEXT.EXE, but it's exactly the same as the version here on CIS that has been giving people fits. Sony has confessed that there is, indeed, an installation problem with the Laser Library and Windows 3.1. They're working on a fix with Microsoft. Sony's east coast tech support, (201) 368-3774 is taking names and phone numbers for a fix as soon as they have it. The west coast tech support gal (with an attitude) doesn't know there's a problem yet. The San Jose, CA division office, when you get high enough, admits to the problem and says there is a manual fix to get running, but it may be a little tricky. Apparently the installation program for the LL works fine for W3.0, but in W3.1, it nukes the icon library file LASERLIB.IL from W3.1 and then can't open the program group without it. If you recopy the file from disk #6 to its proper place (no, I don't know where that is, sorry) and manually set up the program group and know how to load the Sony drivers and MSCDEX, you've got a chance. I also tried asking Sony about the long-rumored upgrade to MPC compatibility for the LL. They finally offed me to Media Vision in Fremont, CA who's developing something, but I couldn't reach anybody who knew exactly what, how much, or when. They did say they thought they'd have something in about 60 days. MV, are you there and could you comment semi-officially, of course??
