#NewTek & Babylon 5
20 messages in this thread
There is a new Sci-Fi TV series coming out called Babylon 5. The SFX on
the show will be done by NewTek. That's right. NewTek themselves will be
handling the special effects. I got this information in the Sci-Fi forum.
It sounds too good to be true. ANy idea when and where this show will be
on the air?? (I'm a NYC boy)

Its going to be a syndicated show thats supposed to start in November.
The show will start this fall. One of the stations pre-signed to run the
show is WWOR channel 9. (I love giving out good news.)
The show must have a LOW budget. NewTek is even going to do exteriors of
ships and the station. The toaster is good but not good enough to make
computer generated ships that are good enough for TV.
They could do great on displays and other computer F/x but a scifi show
should use models for ships.
Have you seen Ron Thornton's LightWave renderings and animations? If not, I
urge you to reconsider your opinion. NewTek has shown a few bits from
Babylon V, and it's incredibe. Thornton is an old-time special effects
guy, he did the tin train crash scene in Addams Family movie, worked on Dr.
Who, Ghostbusters, and more.
OK…I give up…What's Babylon V? It sounds familiar for some reason,C
but I just can't place where I heard about it.

Are there any Babalon graphics in the NewTek Toaster tape?
Nick
I believe there are at least two animations in the new Toaster 2.0 tape,
which many people haven't seen yet. They handed them out at the NewTek
Xmas party and sent some out to dealers after that.
From what the operator told me the tape that they are giving away free via
that 1-800-765-3406 number is the "updated" tape now. I asked about the 2.0
tape and he said that was what they are sending out now. What is the 2.0
tape like? Does it look like a replacement for the Revolution tape?
Nick
I would not be so sure of that if I were you. I just saw the Toaster 2.0
tape. The spaceships were very impressive.

– whappity whap whap… whap whap!!
I second that comment about the 2.0 Toaster tape. The spaceships in there
were as good as anything I've seen lately on the tube.

Where did you get the toaster 2.0 tape??
Nick
I work in an Amiga dealership. One of our customers, who owns a Toaster,
brought in his copy. New Tek sent one to current owners to tempt them to
upgrade. -Jim
A few nights back CNN had a short segment on the Video Toaster during their
1AM (east coast) show "Showbiz." It included some very impressive exteriors
of a space ship of some sort. Now mention that the Toaster was running
inside an Amiga though.
Those quick 2 spaceship segments were sample BANYLON 5 f/x.
What makes you think NewTek will ONLY use the Toaster? Some of the station
effects will be computer animated but probably not ALL of them.
wrong.. I have seen some incredible looking spaceships done with the
Toaster
Will get a chance to see some of it tonight when SHOWBIZ today repeats on
CNN. Seems they had a toaster report and showed some of the early BABYLON
5 stuff.
