Hi! and Welcome to Jon's MOD reviews! I have for the past few days been downloading a number of MOD files and threw away the bad ones. Here is my evaluation of the "good" ones. WHat constitutes a "good one" you ask? All entries were judged based on their: 1. Musicality 2. Orchestration and the best use of the Amiga Sound Chip 3. Quality of the Samples used in the song 4. Overall great sound I haven't listened to them all of course but as I download and listen to more of them, I will be sure to post my findings… Th winner by far is SPACE.LZH!!! I have never heard such a great use of sound and the 4 voices on the Amiga. The orchestration was incredible and if I ever meet the man (or woman) who wrote this, I will certainly shake their hand. It is a self-running MOD file and I have no idea what program was used to make it. I made a copy of it on tape and played it for some friends. When I told them it was my computer, they didn't believe me. This is a MUST HEAR. Other reviews are… XXXX is the best SPACE.LZH XXXX+ SHININ.LZH XXX FLETCH.LZH XXX CONCRT.LZH XX RAINYN.LZH XXX SPCESO.LZH XXXX ROLOUT.LZH XXX LISTEN.LZH XXXX IPLAY.LZH XXXX PHANT.LZH XXX DIGITA.LZH XXX HEAVEN.LZH XX WARHAM.LZH XXX ALIEN.LZH XX In my reviews, I tried my best not to give any preference to any particular type of music but to judge them based on the quality of how they were put together. All songs listed above are worth the download as they were already the "cream of the crop." Others just didn't cut it in any sence of the word and were not even rated. This is probably out of 25 different MODs total. I will be doing some more transfers here in the next day or so and will prepare my evaluation of many others. This project is purely personal and is an effort to save music lovers time and money by preventing the download of bad material.

THanks for the info. I get a little daunted looking at all those mod files and wondering whether they're all worthless. Your criteria on what makes a good MOD echoes mine to a T. Now I feel a little better getting some of those mods. MC

Jon, Thanks for the MOD reviews. I may grab some more now. A friend came over a few weeks ago and dumped 15 floppies worth of MOD's on me. Stuck 'em all on the HD temporarily – came to 12Mb or so. It took me the better part of an afternoon just to play them all! I expected that a fair amount would be really bad and I'd toss half of them, but I only pitched 15% or so. Same criteria as you, more or less: composition and creativity. MOD's that get one interesting phrase and repeat it 6 times get pitched. If you ever see MOD's called FreeFromGuitar or Cremonia, grab 'em. Karl – via Whap!

If you have them, why don't you upload them. It's free connect time and everyone can benefit. 🙂 Jon

Jon, Well, my time is worth something too. 40-50 MODs is going to take awhile. Maybe when my 14.4 modem arives, I'll do them at 9600. First, I'd have to see what's already here so that I don't repeat them. Also, MOD's seem to travel local BBS's pretty freely, so that people may be more apt to collect them for free. Before I do so, I'll ask the opinion of the Sysops. Karl – via Whap!
