#Help!! Sony LL & Win

Robert, thanks for your answer. I've done the same batch file in DOS inside
Windows to access Sony's LL. The strange thing is that on the LL manual it
says that during the Install prgm. Sony's software should detect if Windows
is present on your system. This has never worked for me in either Windows
3.00 and 3.1. I understand it has never worked for you either! I too have
downloaded from the Microsoft Software Library here on CIS the new
version of MSCDEX, but on my system it won't work. Version 2.21 doesn't
recognize the CD-ROM, it acts as if no CD-ROM is present. Do you think this
upgrade is necessary to run all the new CDs that run under Windows like MM
Beethoven? What did you do to run these CDs under Windows? Does one need to
load a SONY CD driver? Thanks again for your help. Ciao! -Emilio
Emilio, my MSCDEX is dated 7/23/91. I purchases both Composer Quest and MM
Beethoven in March, but neither ran with W30. After upgrading to W31, I
deleted both from my hard drive and started over again. I have a
Soundblaser (not Pro), which is wired to a receiver in my home/office.
Also, the Sony is direct connected to the receiver. I activated the
Soundblaster driver in W31, and the CQ and MM Beethoven setup process that
I would be using CD audio. After setting them up in W31, they worked. I
had some problems, which were that I could access audio once, but if I went
back to the application, audio would not work. I started juggling TSR's,
and found a cure, although I'm not sure what the cure was. I also had
problems when I changed the directory and disk location manually–they
wouldn't run properly. When I erased and reinstalled them on the directory
and drive I wanted, they worked. I don't know why the manual change did
not work.
Anyway, I now can "play" MM Beethoven both with audio, and with the
midi segments. I still can get CQ to crash occasionally, but I think it
has more to do with video. MMB has worked with MSCDEX loaded high and low.
I have removed the device=lanman10 from system.ini, as the 3.1 manual says.
Sorry I don't have more concrete solutions to your problems, but I
just sort of muddled along until things worked. I have bought 4 books on
W31 and spent an expensive amount of time here on forums to gather
information. By the way, Beethoven is a wonderful product and worth the
effort. Robert
Thanks again Robert for the information. I have the Sound Blaster Pro and
the CDROM sometimes works fine with it and some other times doesn't!! I
still have to understand why. I'm obliged to use the old 2.20 Version of
MSCDEX on my system because all the new versions I've downloaded (I've got
three by now!!) hang Windows 3.1 and also the Laser Library. It's amazing
that no one here on the forums can really give a correct explanation of all
the problems we're encountering; but that's the fun part of computers…
trying out everything until one comes upon the solution by himself as you
have done. I hope that in the future someone from SONY will help us owners
of LL to untangle all
we've found. As soon as I'll buy the new MultiMedia titles I'll let you
know. Here in Italy you can only find them bundled with the Sound Blaster
Pro + Internal Matsushita CDROM Kit, so I'll have to wait a while to buy
the separately. Thanks again and continue your job of "never-ending trials"

Emilio, if you can find the 7/23/91 version of MSCDEX v. 2.21, it is the
one that works with Win 3.1 and the LL. MS acknowledged that both recent
versions of 2.21 on their MM BBS and CIS were hosed. Cheers, Keith.
