#Opal Photo-CD Viewer

I wonder if anyone has had the chance to try out that Photo-CD viewer for
the OpalVision board (in library as PCD.LZH). If so, please let us know if
it works! Hopefully we will start seeing it in other viewers as well, such
as ViewTek (Kermit – hint hint <g>).

John, we're not likely to use that PD loader code for PhotoCD in ViewTEK or
ImageFX. Kodak released a statement about that very code stating that they
felt it "probably" infringed upon their patents for PhotoCD. Since Kodak's got
the time and lawyers to back that up, we prefer to wait for CBM to license
PhotoCD for the Amiga community.
Someone unconnected with either GVP or us could easily release a PD PhotoCD
loader for ImageFX if they like since they have no financial stake in either
product.

Someone ought to sue Kodak since it's obvious there is some colusion
between them & Philips to keep this technology away from CBM users.

One of our customers has a problem. He has an Epson 800C scanner and a
transparancy option that is also available for that scanner. Does ImageFX
support the use of this device, and when will a Epson 800C driver be made
available. Currently we are using the Epson 300 driver and work well,
except the transparancy option.

Mark, the current release of ImageFX does not support the Epson 800c at all.
The 300c and 600c (in emulation mode) work fine. A fixed driver will be
available soon. Have your customer make sure he is registered and have him
contact GVP support.

Well I was wondering what the ramifications were of someone releasing a PD
PhotoCD reader for the Amiga who reversed engineered the format. Since it
was written by a person in Europe, I would imagine that Kodak would have a
tough time getting to him via US legal channels, and not sure whether or
not they would want to bother. I'm not sure whether or not anyone here in
the states would want to risk litigation from Kodak for a PD reader. Of
course I did notice that the Opal version did not contain any name or
credits. So I suppose a reader for ImageFX, ImageMaster, or other Amiga
Image Processing programs could just suddenly appear on the nets 8^)
Actually I don't have much sympathy for Kodak. If they would have
supported the Amiga platform like they should have done in the first
place, then they wouldn't have had to worry about anyone reverse
engineering the format.

John…although we Amigans are quite impatient with Kodak's delays in getting
PhotoCD to our favorite computer, we have to look at their side of the story.
Kodak's avowed intention is to develop bug free code they can distribute for
serious developers, and they can only develop so fast on this. On the other
hand, they just announced a toolkit for the SUN computer…sigh.
All I can say is that we should continue to contact Kodak and register our
interest in a PhotoCD toolkit for the Amiga. 1-800-242-2424

Well I can somewhat understand Kodak's side of the story, but then again I
can't think of a better combination than the Amiga and PhotoCD. With the
current line of AGA machines, and what we might see in the future, the
combination is a natural. Sometimes I really get tired of manufacturer's
cop out of not developing for the Amiga because of the numbers game. Well
I'm going to do better than just call them. I have Kodak's address for
PhotoCD development so I'm going to write them a letter and let them know
how I feel (no flame – a polite letter).

So, does this mean that the Photo-CD reading software recently posted here does

Well I don't know Jerry. For one thing, the PhotoCD software is only
for a OpalVision board, and I don't have one. And my Chinon CD-Rom
drive is a CDS-431 and not sure if it is PhotoCD compatable. Maybe
single session, but certainly not multisession. I'm going to be
playing around with the source after I can get ahold of a PhotoCD to
see what I can come up with.

I unexpectedly got an OpalVision at the WOA show this past weekend (at $665 tax
included, I could not pass it up)…and I have a Toshiba 3301 CD-ROM which will
read Single Session disks. Anyone want to loan me a single session disk, hmm?

I agree, I think we need to start another thread to keep the number from
rolling off. We should all call Kodak to let them know how we want
PhotoCD on the Amiga… Call 1-800-242-2424

What IS THAT kodak 1-800 number? <mad scrample searching thru
very cluttered computer desk> I had it here some where….<mumble,
mumble>….Could you please be so kind as to post the TOLL FREE 1-800
number for Kodak to release the necessary software for the Amiga, so
that I and others may call Kodak and nicely ask them to support
PhotoCD for the Amiga.

Please tell us the address to write to so they will get some nice polite
letters from overseas, after all the OpalVision board was designed in
Aussieland. (an island off our West coast…..:-) )
