Hello all,
Well has everyone got their latest mailer from Softwood???
Boy I have seen some deliberate scams to get money but this is getting
old. I have got every upgrade since Pen Pal came out, and paid for them..
We have'nt had FinalCopy II,R1 for a few months and they're already
hitting us up for another $25.00 for the FCII,R2 upgrade.. In all honesty
I will admit the new additions sound great and I feel they were needed.
It is just getting old upgrading every few months.
Anybody else have feelings on this???

I agree! I haven't gotten any mailer yet, and yes I've sent in my warranty
card. $25.00 is a little steep for this upgrade, which is something that
they should upload to this forum anyway.

I sent away my upgrade earlier today (I've been pretty busy lately!)
My A1200 (And A500) + Panasonic 1124 + Final Copy II produce some truly
great print. I love that combo for anything that the appearance is just as
important as the text.

Hi Ric
I have a newish copy of FCII and haven't even sent in the Reg card yet.
Can I request the R2 upgrade concurrent with registering? How much does
it cost to upgrade? Sorry if you have said this a hundred times.

Tom,
First, check in the menus (Project->About->FinalCopy) to see if you
already have Release 2. I specifically need to know the date it was
created. If you could post that here, I would appreciate it.
Otherwise, if Project->About->FinalCopy tells you that you have Release
1, feel free to upgrade by mail when sending in the registration card.
Release 1 to Release 2 is $20 plus $5 for shipping and handling. A check
or money order payable to SoftWood, Inc. will suffice. A personal check
means that your product will not ship until the bank says the check
cleared. That usually means about a 4 or 5 day delay.
By the way, if you purchased a Release 1 on or after February 1, mail
us a copy of your dated receipt and we will send you a release 2 for less
money. To get more specific details (which means, "I forgot!" (Grin)),
call (800) 247-8330.

Thanks. It looks like I ave FCII rel 1, created Sep 28, 1992 so I
guess I will be sending off that $25 for the new version then. It was a
christmas purchase, so no reduction then.
Thank you for the quick reply. I look forward to Rel 2 eagerly, the one
thing I missed was some favorite CG fonts when converting documents. This
program has saved us mucho for advertising handbills setup, ideal for
small business. Thanks for FCII.

I don't really think this is a "scam." There is really no time limit on
the upgrade and think this is a kind of stopgap release to quiet some of
the people who were upset that some of the features they wanted did not
make FC2 (ie: landscape printing and more free fonts.)

Thanks, Ric. When taking into account price and features I consider
Final Copy one of the best software deals on the Amiga. My nine pin
Panasonic printer never looked so good. <g>

Thanks for your opinions.
Naturally, I'd have to say that the staff and programmers at SoftWood
don't mind getting paid. In the Amiga community, there just aren't enough
users for a particular upgrade to last 2 or 3 years. As such, we are
forced to bring you new and wonderful updates more frequently in order
that we can continue to subsist. If we were doing the same thing in the
other markets (IBM compatibles or Mac), we would be just as constrained
because there would be (many) more employees involved in the support of
the product(s).
Upgrades are voluntary. As such, users are not required to purchase
them. Skipping versions, or waiting too long usually results in a higher
upgrade fee. Our upgrade practices are not outside of the norm.

Everybody at Softwood can pat themselves on the back. As I have
stated, I have been with Softwood since Pen Pal. Final Copy, and software
like it, are the reasons I feel good about owning my Amiga. As for new
and wonderful updates, there is always space for improvement. I just
wanted to be the first to start the FCII, R2 Upgrade topic..(grin)

P.S. Could you please tell us more about this automatic PS font download
feature, and how it will work with our SoftFaces collections. Voluntary
upgraders would like to know. (still grinning)

Thanks for the compliments.
Automatic font downloading to a Postscript printer works very well. If
you use a Nimbus Q (that's the format of our fonts, SoftFaces included) or
if you use an Adobe Type 1 in your document, when you tell Final Copy II
Release 2 to print to a Postscript printer, it will automatically download
any and all fonts that are not part of the 'standard' Postscript font.
In other words, Final Copy II Release 2 will download all fonts in a
document that do not start with one of the following: A (Avant-Garde), B
(Bookman), C (Courier), H (Helvetica), P (Palatino), T (Times), and Z
(Zapf-Chancery). (I may have forgotten one or two.)
The only exclusion to this rule is that the CompuGraphic fonts will not
work on your Postscript printer. Instead, the printer will probably
default to Courier.
Well, I tried to over-explain and under-explain this feature. If you
still don't get it, wait till your Release 2 comes in the mail and just
play with it. Just remember, you will NEVER need to use SWDownLoad for
Final Copy II again. Although there might come a time when you'll want it
for something else, so I'd hang on to it.

Saying that I will never have to use SWDownload again is saying what I
wanted to hear…(and I was just getting use to it) Okay, on to the next
topic.
What Type-1 fonts will we be able to use? For example, can we use our
Pagestream font collections in FCII now? Also, when will the upgrade, to
use Type-3 fonts (i.e. Brass Plate or Chrome Bumper) and be able to import
EPS graphics, be available? I think it can easily be assumed that they
are already in the works.
…and when will you change the name to Final Publisher…<grin>

Type-1 fonts can be used as long as you have the file that ends in
".pfb". Final Copy II Release 2 does not care about any other Type-1 font
files, so you should be able to use the ones from PageStream as long as
you've got the *.pfb file.
As for as Type-3 fonts and EPS importing, "I can neither confirm nor
deny…" (this saying is one of Ben Fuller's standard, "I can't say."
sayings).
Regarding Final Publisher…I like it. However, we already have a
working name for the next version. So hang in there.
