On an existing in-house network I have a choice of xmodem, ymodem, or zmodem. Which is faster / better? John

Hey! Zmodem might be better; in fact it IS better but….in my experience y-modem has proven to be faster. It apparently has less overhead. I still use z-modem exclusively when it is available. Z is more robust with noise on the line and has a resume feature that I have used usccessfully more than once when it really saved me a buck or two. Sorry to pick that nit but somebody was bound to. Of those three, Zmodem is considerable better – not only for speed, but also because a failed transfer can be restarted at the place where it stopped.
