#LD with Amiga…

Hi ya all!
I'm back from WOC… I'll be posting my opinions on AmigaArts/MultiMedia.
I bought in NY a Pioneer 2200… It works fine but can't seem to control
it from my Amiga. I was given a custom cable to connect it to the serial
port, but AmigaVision says "Can't initialize player. Please check player,
cable, drivers." I'm using the 2200 Pioneer driver at 4800 bps (I tried
1200 bps too) with the serial.device driver and driver unit 0 and 1.
Can anyone help here?

I've connected Pioneer 4200 LD Players up to my Amiga and the quickest
way to verify that the connection is any good is to launch a regular
terminal program and try to talk to the player directly. You're LD's
owner's manual should have a few pages devoted to the players
instruction set. If all seems okay there, you've eliminated the
player, Amiga, and serial cable from the list of suspects. Focus
your attention on the application in question. (AmigaVision)

Thanxs for the input. I checked the connections inside the cable, and
I have all necessary pins connected (GND-GND, TxD-RxD, RxD-TxD,
DTR-CTS), and the player still doesn't respond from AmigaVision (BTW,
do I need serial.device driver and unit 0 or another from AV?). I
tried JRComm to the player using 4800 bps, 8 bit data, 1 stop bit,
and following the commands that the player responds to (PLAY, STOP,
PAUSE, etc.) haven't got any response yet from the LaserDisc (Pioneer
2200).
Does anybody else know what's happening here? I would appreciate any
help!

I would try another cable. No need for it to be special… any old serial
cable for your Amy will do.
If worst comes to worst, take it to someone that has similar setup and try
to swap your player in their player's place. I know, it sounds
impossible, but look around, you might find someone out there. (I'm
talking about macs really, since macs and laserdisc players are pretty
common)
You might even be able to come over to where I work in the village (You
ARE a New Yorker, right?) where I'm surrounded by about 150 Macs. I'm
sure I could hook one up for you. 8)

I just came back from New York last friday!!! I was at WOCA and other
places to see interactive stuff.
You are right… I AM a New Yorker… what a pity I have to take a long
trip to get there… I went to a nice place in Village called Dr.
Jekyll… spooky!
I guess I'll try other things with the darn Laser! Thanxs for your

Is it common to find serial cables with 15 pins in one side and 25 pins on
the other?

I guess by regular serial cable I mean a regular pioneer cable that they
sell for connection to PC with XT style serial port… meaning 25 pin.
Last time I looked (many a year ago!) they were about $9.
The only place I know that has reliable techs and give you decent service
is a place called Reeves/AV here in NYC. My R&D group used them for all
sorts of LD questions & problems and they always came through. Give them
a call and see if they can help you. BTW, you can buy the cable through
them as well.
