I'm about to buy a modem to replace my ancient unreliable 1200bps Prometheus slug. I'm leaning toward a Supra 9600bps fax/modem. Is this a bad idea for any reason? Also, I'm worried about the link speed option in AutoPilot – how can I properly set the link speed when I don't know how efective the in-modem compression will be? Is this a pit of death I'm about to jump into? Also, what was the big problem with GPFax 2.01 that was being discussed a while ago? I tried to find the original message, but couldn't. Is it worth getting? If anyone can help, I'd REALLY appreciate it. Paul

Paul, If your leaning toward 9600 bps, lean a bit further and get the 14.4k bps model. Chris

Paul, I recently bought the 14.4 which comes with GPFax and ATalkIII. I love it and haven't had any major problems. If you can spare the extra money, go with the 14.4. Steve

I may, yah. It's really tempting. But are there very many places that support 14.4? I guess that'll change as time goes by, anyway, so it's probably a good investment. The only thing though is that w/ MNP compression the 14.4 can get up to 58 or something, right? But isn't the Amiga's native serial port only able to go up to 38.4? So what happens with efficient compression and link speed (maybe only the way AP handles the problem I guess) and so on? Thanks! Paul

If you are going to get a Supra modem, might as well get the 14.4k faxmodem. -Jonathan

I have the Supra 9600 running with AutoPilot. I have the link speed set the highest it can go, and there hasn't been any problems at all. I decided to only go up to 9600 since that's the highest CIS can go, and I heard that the 14.4 can have trouble with noisy lines. Richard -> via the Amiga 1000 AutoPilot
