They use the same technology found in hard disks. Just a different media. FAT table and all.

…huh?! How did you know my name? It's the first time ever somebody gets it right just from "Gus". Any way, take a look at those new drives able to handle both WORMS and Rewritable media. There ain't nothing like WORMS for archives. It's a "somewhat" permanent and secure media.
