#DSP for AMIGA

Hello,
I've got a tech question….been reading some of those British
Future Music and Amiga Format magazines…Heard the Atari Falcon
has a DSP chip in it…When will Amiga put one in their computers.
Knowing that Amiga in my opinion will always run circles around
any Atari…I want to know why their isn't a 16bit Sound chip
for the Amiga line..I read that Atari uses a Motorola designed
chip for the Falcon..I want one for my A500 or if I have to buy
an A1200 or A4000 to get one I will..I'm big on the Techno / Rave
music scene and I've scene what can be done with what's in the
Amiga right now…Imagine what a 16bit Digital Signal Processing
chip would do…It's time for a SUPER 16bit Paula sound chip with
full DSP functions…Fitted for A500's and the new lines coming
out…

I'm not certain, but I believe CBM does plan to release a DSP chip for
the Amiga. However, you can have hard disk recording for the Amiga right
now. Sunrize has two boards available for the Amiga now. The AD1012 is a
12-bit board and the AD516 is a 16-bit board. They both allow direct to
hard disk recording and they integrate seamlessly with Bars&Pipes Pro.
Even if CBM does release a DSP chip, I really don't believe it will be as
good as the AD516 board. So you don't have to worry that if you buy the
board that it will become obsolete if and when the CBM DSP chip is
released.

Commodore will be using the AT&T DSP series. They are for one very much
faster than the old Motorola in the Falcon and it looks set to become the
defacto standard with both Apple and IBM supposedly going to use them in
forthcomming machines.
AT&T I believe has also created an OS of sorts for it, with quite a few
companies coming out with third party DSP libraries for it. So depending
on wether you want to use it as a Modem, Sound processor or Graphics
Decompression you just load up the appropriate library and fly! 🙂

From whiat I understand, the Sunrize boards are using the Analog Devices'
ADSP-2105 chip. Nice little chip. Only costs $9.95 each, no matter what
quantity, 1 to one million.

Yes, you're right. I just got my AD516 board and it does have the
Analog Devices' DSP chip.

Yeah, that ADSP-2105 is a nice little chip, especially for its $9.90
price tag. I think that these are the specs:
1K words of 24 bit program memory
512 words of 16 bit data memory
One buffered serial port
Simple multiprocessor interface
12.5 MHz clock, 80ns instruction cycle
68 pin PLCC or PGA
Nice little chip, I think. Just look what it does to audio on the
AD516 board. Probably some pretty neat stuff.

If anyone's interested: I've been doing DSP with the Amiga for a while now.
I've been using a board available as a kit based around the Motorola 56001 (the
"old" chip the Atari and NeXT used). It's more powerful (and more expensive)
than the Analog Devices part, but the main reason I started using it a year or
so ago was that it has become something of a standard. There are a bazillion
bits of code, real-time operating systems, helpful documents, whatever out
there that I can use with this hardware; for an Amiga user/developer, this is
not something that I'm used to 🙂 Widely-adopted parts are great.
Anyway: we've got a system for creating DSP algorithms graphically on the host
Amiga, using a unit-generator sort of approach (icons and wires between them).
Hit the Run button, and the code is compiled, uploaded to the board and run in
about the time it takes to take your finger off the mouse button. I've used it
to create a couple of pieces; you can reconfigure the algorithms on the fly,
while the damn thing runs (if you don't mind a little glitching), and you can
hook icons that control parameters of your DSP process into the patch to
control things like filter settings, reverb settings, whatever, as it runs.
There's provision for multiple DSP processors, although I'm only using one at
the moment.
The kit is still available, for about $200 for the processor board (including
board, parts, etc) and another $150 for the A/D/A board, but it's definitely a
hacker's project. Several people have had trouble bringing theirs up. Email

software/music sounds interesting.
Wow! Sounds neat. I would like more info on the boards and your software. Is
this a public domain hardware project, like the LUCAS accelerator?

I am very interested inthis board . On what Amiga does this fit ? I need more

Sounds very interesting, I would appreciate some more info, or a phone
number. I would like to sync a DSP algorithm to live video so as to filter
noise, or even record to hard disk and then play back in sync with a video. A
DSP board is definately one of the building blocks, and I have some tech info
on the Motorola chip from a UCSD DSP course I took a few years back.
Am presently in the sf@ca area and would like to know if anyone else around
here shares my interst in sound processing.
