How many people out there have a CD-ROM drive hooked up to their Amiga? Which
kind, which file system are you using? What problems have you had with it?

I have one. I bought the Toshiba 3401 External. I use the Xetec
software, and I've had zero problems.

I'm using a Toshiba 3201b drive on my 3000 with the Xetec driver with no
problems. I tried the ASIM driver first, but it caused problems with the
non-standard block sizes of the NASA disks.
Mark: Have you had any problems reading some of the IBM CD's with your
3201B and Xetec software? I have pretty much the same setup, but also have
a Chinon-431 drive as my 2nd. CD-Rom. All of the CD's the Chinon will read
just fine, but some of the CD's the Toshiba won't read at all, or gives
scrambled directory's. Have you seen this yet?

I don't have too many IBM CDs. Mostly I use it for the Fish
collection and the NASA Voyager disks. I do have a couple of
standard ISO-9660 disk ( Desktop Library and GNU/X11R5 ) that seem to
work fine. Like I said, they only time I had problems was with the
ASIM driver not working with nonstandard block sizes, I haven't had
any problems with the Xetec driver yet.
John; you asked Mark if he was having problems with a Toshiba 3201B
and the Xetec software. I'll chime in because I'm experiencing a
problem with a Toshiba drive I'm unsure of the model of; it shows to
SCSI as an XM 3232. I'm using Xetec's software, but I don't think
that matters:
Anyway, it's apparently <ONLY> with Fred Fish Online disks from
Hypermedia. Sometimes the drive will refuse to recognize the Fish disk
as being <IN> the drive (Xetec's CDstatus indicated "No disc in
drive"); this even happens during bootup before the Xetec software is
loaded. When it DOES recognize it, the eventually during access the
drive will pop up a read/write error.
Was <THIS> what you're inquiring about?
Or does anyone else out there have a clue what's happening?
Hey neat! I'm not alone!
I have a Texel DM-5024 external Multispeed drive, and I get the same
errors unless I force the thing to _only_ read at 150RPM.
Both the CD-ROM's I have from Walnut Creek CD-ROM (AB20, and GIF's Galore)
exhibit none of these problems.
And Asim's Fish Market? Well, we won't talk about that….

What's really strange is that I didn't <USE> to have this problem <I
THINK>…I had three <OTHER> system problems that might have masked this
one, although the rate at which this one shows up makes it seem like that
is unrealistic.
Well, I seem to have my own little "glitches" using this CD-ROM drive of
mine. Try this one: I _must_ keep a CD in my drive or the system will guru
on me after a few minutes. No other discernable reason, it just does.
Time to roll out enforcer again. Maybe this time with Mungwall loaded as
well.
Grr.

I have a Chinon CD-ROM, it's laying in the corner, moved my PC up to a faster
drive. Where can I get the CD file system/drivers from Xetec or anyone else
for that matter ???

My Chinon drive is on loan from my local dealer (Amiga City) for a
magazine review, as is the Xetec software.
I can only suggest contacting them directly. I think I have seen an ad
in Amiga World.

I have a Toshiba XM3201B CD ROM drive and I use both the Xetec and
ASIMWare drivers (and like them both). I've had no porblems reading CD's.
Thank you everybody for your feedback. Is Xetec still around? What are the
differences between it and Asim?

You know, I've been using them for so long now, and they work so
transparently for access to files on the CDROMs, that I can't even tell
you anymore which is 'better' or what the differences are… I generally
mount the CDROM drive using the ASIMware s/w… I think because initially,
it was the only one that allowed access to MAC stuff… but the XETEC does
that now as well.
As far as I know, Xetec is still around.

I am presently using a Toshiba 3301b, with an older version of the Xetec
software. Never had a problem at all, just plug and play! Everything
works *very* well, as Xetec has a very easy installation process.

Toshiba XM-3301. Hooked to A3000. Originally used CDRom-FS driver
software(initial release) but switched to Xetec software which was much
more capable. I needed to use discs with 512 byte blocks (NASA CDRoms) in
addition to the more common 2k byte blocks. I understand that CDRom-FS has
been upgraded but I never got a notice form them.

The current release of CDROM-FS (1441) supports 512 byte blocks.

I'm glad to hear that it does. I even offered to send an appropriate NASA
disc to Allen Purtel(he wrote CDRom-FS) so that he would have a sample
disc to work with but he seemed to be in no hurry to upgrade the software.
I figured he would eventually do it. For some reason CDRom-FS would not
coexist with Whap! which I used daily. Anytime I called a file requestor
from within Whap! while CDRom-FS was installed I would get a crash. I
switched to the Xetec software which has worked great. CDRom-FS might be
nearly perfect now but was not the best choice when I switched about a
year ago. I hear the early bugs in the Asimware CDRom filesystem have been
fixed and that it works well too.

I have 3 Toshiba XM3201B CD-ROM drives hooked up to various Amigas here at
the house. All are run with Canadian Prototype Replicas CDROM-FS
software. Have had no problems with this setup.
I hope your inquiry means that SL is looking at software distribution via
CD-ROM disc.
There are a dozen or so user group members who have CDROM drives also.

All: I'm a little confused. I thought there were 2 third party CDROM file
systems: Xetec and Asim. Are there 2 or 3?
What about ISO9660 compatibility? Have you had problems reading any dual Mac/PC
disks on your Amiga?
We have a couple of drives (Apple and Denon) that refuse to work on a 3000 with
the asim driver. We believe this is due to a SCSI compatibility problem. Asim
advises me that some NEC portables do not work well on the IVS and 2091
controllers. Are there lots of problems like this out there, or are these
irregularities?

I strongly advise that you try the Xetec driver out. I have yet to hear
from anyone having problems with it.

I have a Toshiba 3201B and CDROM-FS software. No problems. But if I
wwere buying again, I would have chosen a newere drive that is
multisession and PhotoCD compatible.

Asimware Innovations (416-578-4916) markets AsimCDFS, a CDRom FileSystem
for the Amiga.
HyperMedia markets CDROM-FS.
Xetec (913-827-0685) markets their CDx-650 'system' which is either an
internal or external CDRom drive and s/w… but you can purchase the s/w
separatly.

CDROM-FS comes from a Canadian firm. I've mislaid the original disk at
the moment, and I cannot give you the exact name or the address – but it
is a good company, and the software works well.
