Texture Universe

Has anybody actually seen or used this CD-ROM of textures? Is it any good?
I've heard that it's ok, but not worth $200. I'd be interested to find out.
Kelly,
<< I've heard that it's ok, but not worth $200…. >>
It's another tool for the professional animator to go along with the libraries
of purchasable meshes, image processing tools, IPAS effects and more RAM. Take
the time to do it yourself or buy it. It's good to
have choices.

I've received 2 mailers – It looks like a useful product…especially the IPAS
Image Browser. $199 til 6/15/94. E.
That's true, it's almost worth it just for the image browser!

Regardless of the fact that it has some of the most useful textures available,
at very high resolution, the REAL value in TU is the IPAS browser, which lets
you do keyword and filename searches on image and map paths instantaneously,
from inside 3DS. The disk is a bargain.

Assuming you can use the browser with any drive in your map paths (and the
interface grab in the mailer implies you can), it would be worth $200 *_just_*
for the browser.
They didn't put any rescrictions on the paths for any strange reason did they ?

Yup, you can use it on any drive… even CD-ROM's. Tom came up with an
ingenious scheme for hash-encoding the CD-ROM's directory structure and then
placing the index for it on the magnetic media… so even a search of a
CD-ROM's directory is instantaneous… no matter how many files arre on the CD.

Well worth the money then…..the textures are just a bonus <g>.

So why didn't you golks market it as the "IPAS Browser" instead of the "texture
Universe"? 🙂 -dave
Very Cool!
You mean this thing is available now already!? HOW DO I GET ONE!?!?
Call 800/435/7771. And if you want to check out the browser's UI, grab TU.GIF
(somewhere here in the DL's).

PS: A cute feature of browse.pxp is it's ability to be called from ANY module
in 3DS… including the materials editor. It exploits an obscure aspect of
IPAS3 which gives PXP's that flexibility.
Marion,
The texture universe also available at the same price from you any Adesk
Multimedia Dealer.
Ang
That would be nice! It would be great to be able to see your textures before
applying them, I imagine it would save a bunch of time.
Thanks,
KC
Kelly,
Greg and I had an opportunity to see it at the last Dealer Council Meeting
(albeit in Beta form). Very Nice! A nice browser for both Windows and a
"Plug-In" browser for inside 3DS (Yes … the new term for IPAS routines is
Plug-In .. per Adesk personnel at NAB).
Great deal .. you can get the same deal on the product from your dealer.
Ang
Angelo,
Thanks, sounds pretty good. From all the responses I've gotten, it seems
everyone is in agreement on the fact that just the IPAS Browser alone is worth
the $199!
