#Toaster improvements?

I recently ordered a Toaster and I was expecting it to show up by
last Friday. I got a call today from my local dealer (or actually a
secretary there), relaying a message from one of their people out at
NAB that my Toaster was being delayed several days because of some
improvements that NewTek was making to the Toasters shipping right
now. She had no details, but she said the change was affecting all of
their customers with Toaster orders. Does anyone have any ideas what
this could mean?

You're right. I just got confirmation from our rep (who's at NAB) that it is
ToasterPaint that's being upgraded. After all the nasty things I've heard about
ToasterPaint here lately, I suspect this is a very good thing for me.

Yupper, I've heard ALOT of folks complain about Toasterpaint. I've never
used it myself tho…………

After spending about three hours at the NewTek Booth at NAB I can tell
you that the New Toaster Paint was being shown….. However they told all
that it was not ready to ship nor did they have any Idea when it would
ship. Allthough they were sure that it would be included as part of the
Flyer Package in the Fall. Don't get your hopes up too high though. I
watched the demo of TPaint more than I did of the Flyer. I dose have a
nice-new-Toaster-like interface. but for the most part its the same old
program. It dose have Full screen Ham8 display (for the 4000's) and it
dose have a real time air-brush that is kind'a note worthy. It now
supports Post script Fonts and can rotate them. It also have a strech
feature. for example, if you had a portrait you could grab the corner of
the smile and drag it up to the ear to make a Jokerish smile. I wish I
could have seen it but when I asked them to show it to me it crashed the
system. this sent every one into a panic. don't worry though it was the
first crash of a long week of crashes.
also of note is the new version of Lightwave (3.5 I think) that has
Steve Worley textures like "crumple" and "scale." and a new test render
mode that will alow you to render 8×6 repeat image, so you can change a
texture and render it right next to the last versionto compare.
Let's see did they show any thing else…. Hummmm, Oh yea there was
this thing called the Flyer. but if you haven't heard about it yet, you
will.

I wonder why my rep, who was at NAB, said that my Toaster was going to get here
in the next couple of days with the new version of ToasterPaint? It sounds as
though SOMEONE — either my dealer or NewTek — is lying. I wonder who and why?

I don't think anyone was LYING. I think that they were just in a hurry
to show what they had. I was there on Monday, the first day, early in the
moring, and Lee Stranahan and the other guy who was demoing stuff said
that they Litteraly got the software the night before, just in time for
the unvailing. So please take anything I say here as heresay. They updated
the Flyer software twice while I was there so things were a'changin'. I
hope that TPaint2 will be ready very soon, but like I said in one of my
messages, it did crash when Brad (not me, the guy who was demoing it)
tried to show me a new feature. Besides If it was that close to release
(in my opinion) they would have been more informed about it.

Well darn…. I was hoping that they would port (Hey NewTek, are you
listening?) all of the toaster screens… esp the new paint and LW… to other
display boards like the PicassoII, etc. Any word on that? I really want to
get away from the small 14inch 1084 ASAP!

I dont think you will ever see that happen. Scince the Toaster is a
displyboard. I could be wrong, though it's never happend yet.

Actually, I kinda get the feeling (ie., a gleaning from a few conversations
with some guys close to the action) that LW will possibly look at a few other
boards for its display. This is one of the productivity problems that other
platforms have hands down over the Amiga interlaced LW screens. This will not
mean that the output will be any different, only that the layout and modeler
interface may be available on a different board.

There is talk that the Toaster 4000T Workstations will have 24 bit display
capabilities built in…
Well, You would still need the toaster to get the image out, or to make LW run
(I'm not using, or never will go to the soft and fuzzy solution to LW!) in the
first place. I just want to work with LW (and the other Toaster and Amiga
goodies) the same way I have worked on the SGI's….with a BIG SCREEN!
I don't think this would allow NewTek any money loss, but would only serve to
push a positive professional image!

I wonder what it would cost NewTek to buy Warm and Fuzzy Logic, kill the
thing, and incorporate its basics into a future Toaster system, or just
obviate the need for it. It's not so much the LW w/o a Toaster that
interests me as the BIG SCREEN, RENDER IN ANY MODE thing. _THAT_ is gold,
I think, and NewTek should have some.

For me, it is almost becoming a necessity more than a want to desire to have a
large screen format to work on. Let me add, a large screen in a higher
resolution… a large screen that just blows up the lines insn't what I want!
Also, I wish I could type!

Well I can tell you since they showed it at NAB, that the new version of
LW layout, does support, the Picasso, 800×600, mode and is selectable in
options, (I was told it should support other board also, and that modler
is being worked on.)

Brett, is keeping very bussy doing Macros for LW Modler, (I beleave he
is up to 200 now).
Every thing else is great, I will put up more info when I remember or
lok at my notes.

Well, knowing Brett, they could do almost anything… turn cubes into
cylinders….build 3D objects from one out of focus 2D scanned IFF… Erase
your videotapes…..

the side walk" Toaster meeting in front of Metro mis-schedule, only two of us
there Day, huh?)

Hmm He has stuff like a star maker, Tree maker, usefull stuff like
finding the location of certain points. Alot of Math orented stuff to make
modeling interesting. He has it in his head that when he gets these first
200, clean and finished to release them as a package for sale.
