I plan on going to Buffalo NY in may for the Eclipse, and I would like to due
some collecting , if I can. Can anyone suggest some places there.

Hi, Francis–
As I recall, you have shown an interest in fossils; others must have some
notions there. Jerry tells us how he uses Devonian fossils in his backyard for
throwing at woodchucks, perhaps a couple of hours from Buffalo.
If you are interested in fluorescent minerals at all and do not mind a bit of a
drive, Bancroft, Ontario (about halfway between Toronto and Ottawa) beckons.

Thanks for the info, I have not tried my hand at minerals,I mostly collect
fossils.
I must say, I have never heard of using fossils in that way 🙂

Francis,
I assume that you want to collect fossils in this area; mineralogically,
Buffalo is not terribly exciting. I do have the Zabriskies' Rockhounding in
Eastern New York State and Nearby New England, if you will be passing through
these areas on your way to Buffalo. If you're interested, let me know.

You mentioned about eastern NY, I might be heading through that part if there
are some spots that are worth visting. I will be coming up on route 17 near
Binghamton NY from Sayre PA. If they are not to far from there.

Hi Francis-
The Buffalo area (and the Niagara Falls area) are largely shale and limestone.
Any creek bed will have extremely nice Silurian fossils (sea life), and if you
go south about 15 miles, you're into Devonian. The Devonian fossils aren't so
hot since the water was rather deep. As you proceed east, the water got
shallower and fossils get more abundant. The only real mineral collecting is on
glagial gravel pits. You might find some quartz, but mostly limestone, shale
and slate again. (I've found nice coral fossils in gravel pits…..) The good
minerals are in the North country and Eastern NY…………JD
