Can anyone suggest a board to use to bring in video images from my Hi-8
camcorder? Would a simple Targa board do the trick? I am using a 486 with 32
meg ram, 500 meg hd, and I am looking into purchasing a video board soon.

A Targa+ or ATVista or other framebuffer would work, but you would have to use
it in conjunction with a single frame capable VTR/controller combo, unless you
just want to grab a single frame (I'm not even sure if it'll do a single frame
grab, to tell you the truth… I've never tried it).
Another choice is the DPS PAR with the optional TBC card (I think it'll run you
@ $5K inclunding HD), which can record live video off your camera or VTR or
whatever in real time. The PAR can also play back animations in 24bit
756(?)x486. The drawback would be that it uses a motion JPEG stream, which can
cause artifacts under certain circumstances. The response to this hardware has
been very positive, though, and I think unless you're doing highest end video
output it'll work for you.
Matrox is also coming out with a motion JPEG board/framebuffer combo called the
MAX. It'll need an EISA motherboard system, fast SCSI II EISA HD controller
and approved HD, but will be able to array disks, so you can get extremely
little to no compression, therefore "visually lossless" playback. It'll be @
6K not including controller and HD. You'll be able to "rotoscope" (capture)
live video with this board no problem.

You might try the Xingit! board from Xing Technologies. It does a pretty good
job of compressing video and you can plug in your camcorder right on the back
of the card. It saves your video as mpeg. The board runs about $450.
